 The School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering is a multi-disciplinary centre of research and education located in the heart of London’s vibrant design community. It is proud of its research advances and of educating thousands of undergraduates and postgraduates in STEM subjects.

The Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering has over 400 undergraduate students studying on several MEng and BEng programmes; and over 100 masters and 90 doctoral research students. It conducts research in three Research Centres: Systems and Control; Biomedical Engineering; and Photonics and Instrumentation. The Department has a long tradition of excellence in education and research and continuously improves the content of its programmes.

The Robotic, Autonomy and Machine Intelligence Research Group as part of the Centre of Systems, Autonomy and Control (SAC) is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow. The project involves Research into AI for Space Navigation for Space Vehicles such as landers and orbital robotics. The project is funded, conducted and delivered to European Space Agency (ESA).

Responsibilities

The post holder will conduct research to develop Deep based absolute and relation vision based/Lidar based navigation (motion estimation) solutions for space vehicles, which involves theoretical development of the concepts based on the background work of the team on this kind of research. Software programming in real time of the developed algorithms and testing them on real data and testing facilities available at City University of London and ESA, ESTEC, Netherlands made available for this project.
Other areas of contribution will be in research related to the navigation and mapping, space engineering, deep networks and robotics systems perception.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will hold a relevant MSc or PhD in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Space Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related field. They should have experience in research in the area of space engineering, deep networks, guidance navigation and control and computer vision. Software and Real time programming capabilities is highly desirable.
