The National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) plays an important role in the Irish Health Services as the principal diagnostic and reference service for clinicians investigating virus infections. The NVRL currently offers a repertoire of over 130 tests for the diagnosis of at least 45 different pathogens, and performs in excess of 900,000 tests annually.
Since the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the NVRL has played a pivotal role in the national testing response. In order to increase laboratory testing capacity for SARS-CoV-2, the NVRL will operate a stand-alone SARS-CoV-2 testing laboratory at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), Backweston Laboratory Complex, Youngs Cross, Ballymadeer, Celbridge, Co. Kildare. In order to facilitate delivery of the required service, staff are expected to operate on a shift pattern over a 7-day period.
The main purpose of the NVRL Registrar in Medical Virology - COVID19 post is to provide of medical advice to clinical users of the laboratory on provisional diagnosis, clinical management and rational viral testing procedures, with a particular focus on SARS-CoV-2. The appointee will be expected to be registered for continuing professional development (CPD) with the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and to fulfil requirements for annual certification and for appropriate revalidation
Salary: €56,800 - €66,900
Appointment will be made in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines
