System Developer at the Department of Computer Science (AI/ML)

Faculty of Engineering, LTH, The Department of Computer Science

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

Background
We are a group of researchers in Lund in cooperation with Stanford University working on an R&D project aimed at building a groundbreaking startup that has the potential to revolutionize cloud and database systems using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques.

We were recently offered seed funding by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) under the WALP program fund to be housed at Lund University to put together an enterprise-grade product with our already fully developed Machine learning technology at its heart.

To that end we are building a team that will be based in Lund (Sweden) and work closely with us to take us from the existing core AI/ML engine to a robust finished product in a thriving R&D environment.

Job Description
We are looking for an accomplished full-stack developer who has prior experience building end-to-end solutions and has a passion for databases (e.g., Esp PostgreSQL) to be our first hire in the team.

We have built a scalable revolutionary ML engine that will be the heart of the solution. This role will be the lead developer who builds the product around our core technology. This involves building a robust scalable back-end solution that is hosted on cloud (AWS, GC, etc.) and then extending that to a seamlessly integrated front-end.

If the project is successful, the selected applicant will be required to write a formal research paper to show the benefits of the new system. The selected applicant will work in close collaboration with Assistant Professor Luigi Nardi (Lund University, in cooperation with Stanford University).

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • completed a second cycle-degree/MSc within the subject of the position
  • 3+ years of backend development for websites / cloud hosted services in Python or Java.
  • web front-end capability, HTML/JS/CSS.
  • some experience as a DBA (PostgreS etc).
  • a track record of delivering high-quality work on schedule.
  • familiarity with AI/ML concepts.
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Other qualifications
It is a merit to have:

  • proven hands-on experience building services and end-to-end products, either in Django, Flask, PHP or NodeJS.
  • a knack for service design and architecture building robust scalable backend frameworks.
  • experience building Cloud hosted services on AWS, GC etc.
  • passion for databases, esp PostgreSQL, graph DBs, etc., bonus points if you’re in the developer community there.
  • can share examples of having written clear replicable code and documentation.
  • the skills and aspiration eventually to lead a team of developers.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
Fixed-term employment of 6 months. If the project is successful there will be the possibility to be part of creating a new start up company.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English and be compiled into a PDF-file containing:

  • résumé/CV.
  • we’d love to see what you’ve accomplished, so share links to your previous work/artifacts if possible.
  • contact info of at least two individual professional references.
