The Department was first established as the “Translation Programme” in 1990, and was awarded full independent departmental status in 2019. During our 30-year history, we have built a reputation as a leading centre for teaching and research in Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies. The Department offers teaching at BA, MA and Research Postgraduate levels, and is among the most internationalized in the region, with an academic team comprising members from Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, the UK and Australia. The Programme has particular strengths in literary translation, minority cultures in translation, and interpreting, and is expanding its profile in the field of translation technology.
Assistant Professor (PR0188/20-21)
The Department is now seeking applicants for the above position. Applicants from all areas of the discipline will be considered. Preference will be given to those with expertise in at least one of the following areas: (i) translation technology and localization; (ii) audiovisual translation (including modes of assistive audiovisual translation such as audio description); (iii) community interpreting; and (iv) intercultural studies, preferably with interests in minority cultures. Given the Chinese/English orientation of the majority of the Department’s course offerings, a command of Chinese is expected.
The appointee will undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and will be expected to play an active role in research and publication. He/She will also be responsible for supervision of undergraduate honours projects and postgraduate dissertations at the Master’s and Doctoral levels. The appointee is also expected to take on administrative duties.
Applicants should possess a PhD in Translation, Interpreting, Intercultural Studies or other relevant fields, and have an appropriate research and publication record, as well as teaching experience at the tertiary level.
Initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of three years. Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
