We are inviting applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Seasonal Weather Prediction (fixed term 3 years) to support our expanding programme of research in the School of Geography and Lincoln Centre for Water and Planetary Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research on the NERC-funded study, ‘Northwest European Seasonal Weather Prediction from Complex Systems Modelling’ and related work as directed by the Principal Investigator, Prof. Edward Hanna. 

Based at the University of Lincoln Brayford Campus the Post-Doctoral Research Associate will report directly to Professor Hanna. They will also work closely with the rest of the project team, which includes academic collaborators in the Lincoln Institute for Agri-Food Technology, the Universities of Oxford, Reading and Sheffield and the Met Office, as well as industrial partners.

The successful candidate will be qualified to at least PhD level (or be about to receive a PhD) in a relevant subject. Previous appropriate training and experience are essential. The Post-Doctoral Research Associate will be involved in all aspects of the research but primarily focus on developing innovative seasonal weather forecasts using statistical modelling methods and determine the practical benefits of these forecasts with end users. They will also be responsible for supporting preparation of reports, conference abstracts, presentations, and journal papers. There will be opportunities to be involved in the preparation of future research proposals.

The applicant will have experience of relevant statistical analysis and/or modelling of large datasets, and ideally have some background in meteorology and/or climate science. They should be knowledgeable of and proficient in the use of relevant computer software and programming such as R, Fortran or C++. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work well with members of the wider project team and research centre staff.
