PhD Position in Modelling, Simulation and Digital Twins of Bio Technological systems

Employer
NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY - NTNU
Location
Trondheim, Norway
Closing date
29 Nov 2020

About the position

The Department of Engineering Cybernetics is looking for a PhD candidate in Aquaculture technology - Modelling, simulation and digital twins of bio-technological systems - a NTNU-SINTEF-cooperation .

This position attached to the SINTEF ACE project "RACE Digital Cage", started in June 2020 (see https://www.sintef.no/en/projects/race-digital-cage/), and will focus on developing mathematical models for simulating the biological processes in aquaculture systems and explore the potential of using such models in a digital twin concept for mirroring the biological processes in a computer. This will entail improving and expanding existing mathematical models and combining these with real-time data from sensors and instruments.

The candidate will get access to existing mathematical models of fish in sea-cages through the simulation platform FhSim that is hosted by SINTEF Ocean (more info: https://www.fhsim.no), and real datasets on fish states collected in sea-cages using different instruments.

The candidate will be provided with a main academic supervisor from NTNU Department of Engineering Cybernetics and a scientific co-supervisor from SINTEF Ocean.

Duties of the position

The candidate will be expected to contribute to expanding the world of science in areas relevant for achieving the project Objectives of RACE Digital Cage. These may include:

  • Validate and further develop mathematical fish models using data from actual fish farms (e.g. echo sounders, machine vision)
  • Develop new model modules for simulating e. g. fish stress and fish responses under operational variability such as crowding
  • Develop data assimilation methods for estimating fish states (behaviour, physiology, stress) in sea-cages by combining mathematical models and real-time sensor systems in estimator structures (e.g. Kalman filters)
  • Disseminate results through peer-reviewed conferences/journals
  • Collaborate with students/researchers at NTNU/SINTEF

There exists a possibility for participating in departmental duties, such as teaching assistance; these shall be negotiated during the job interview.

Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Engineering Cybernetics or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

Additional qualifications for the position include:

  • Programming experience (e.g. Matlab, C/C++, Java)
  • Experience in mathematical modelling and/or data processing
  • Knowledge within estimation techniques
  • Good written and oral English language skills.

Although not mandatory, knowledge within marine biology (especially related to fish) and/or practices and technology within the aquaculture industry will weigh positively in the candidate evaluation process.

Excellent English skills, written and spoken, are required. Applicants from non-European countries where English is not the official language must present an official language test report. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)

IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Academic results, publications, relevant specialization, work or research experience, personal qualifications, and motivation and a desire to make an impact on critical societal problems will be considered when evaluating the applicants.

Other qualifications

Despite our research having civilian objectives, the research project uses equipment that is restricted by export licenses and ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations). Applicants that are citizens of Norway, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, EU or NATO countries are eligible. Other applicants, instead, in order to be considered for the position are required to provide evidence of eligibility to use such equipment and attach this evidence in their application.

Personal characteristics

We seek a candidate who is curious, has the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and is strongly committed to keep an open, honest and professional interaction with the colleagues at NTNU and SINTEF, based on mutual respect, trust and good-will.

We offer
