Senior Lecturer (Education) - Lead for Student Support/Module Lead

An experienced medical educator with a commitment to student wellbeing and an enthusiasm for educational innovation, is sought to join the team currently developing a team-based, technology-enhanced curriculum for the new Brunel Medical School (BMS). The first cohort of students – all international and from diverse backgrounds – will join the 5-year BMS MBBS programme in September 2021. 

The post holder will have broad involvement as part of an established core education team in shaping the new medical school, developing a strong system of student support and contributing the development of a focused areas of the Year 1 curriculum as a Module Lead (according to his or her academic area of expertise). 

BMS is part of the Brunel University’s College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, which is an established leading provider of health professions education, including Physician Associate, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Social Work programmes.

It is envisaged that BMS will pioneer new approaches to student support, incorporating a range of initiatives. These will include peer support (potentially involving other health professions students), with academic and clinical mentors fulfilling personal tutor roles. In addition, there will be teaching to promote healthy lifestyles, resilience and self-care, in conjunction with the provision of a range of online resources.

The BMS programme will also be distinctive in other ways; a defining feature will be teamwork: team-based learning (TBL) will replace all face-to-face lectures, with clinicians and scientists forming content expert teams. Anatomy practicals will utilise high-quality plastinated cadaveric specimens, with co-teaching by radiologists and surgeons. There will be opportunities for interprofessional learning throughout. A range of digital technologies will enhance the student experience, providing continuity in the event of disruption to campus or placement learning. 

The curriculum will emphasise communication skills and person-centred care. Students will have early and sustained opportunities to engage with patients in a variety of clinical settings, with primary and community care featuring prominently.

This post would be ideally suited to an educator with substantial experience of medical student teaching, a passion for educational innovation, a commitment to the wellbeing of students, and an interest in contributing broadly to the development of BMS. The post holder will be joining an enthusiastic education team of academic, clinical and professional staff, dedicated to developing doctors with the skills to thrive in rapidly changing healthcare and education environment.
