Job Details

Research Fellow
Faculty of Arts Design and Social Sciences

We are seeking a dynamic and energetic Research Fellow to join our team of action researchers exploring design-led innovation within and between the region’s creative, cultural and digital SMEs as part of the Creative Fuse North East programme.

Creative Fuse North East is a regional university collaboration delivering multi-disciplinary expertise and support to:

  • develop and embed innovation capacity in North-East creative, cultural and digital SMEs; and,
  • to catalyse and facilitate the spillover of creative-led innovation from the creative sector into the wider economy (e.g. manufacturing, knowledge economy, health etc).

Creative Fuse has recently commenced its second phase and, over the next two years, will deliver new cross-sector collaborations that nurture and mould shared innovation potential, aligning with the Industrial Strategy, North East Local Enterprise Partnership and Tyne Valley Combined Authority strategies. It will produce a) a more robust, innovative and economically viable creative and digital sector; and b) wider application of creative, digital and design-led innovation in support of a more diffuse and collaborative regional capability.

Situated within the School of Design and working under the supervision of the principal investigator, Associate Professor Mark Bailey, the successful applicant will develop and lead desk-based and design-led, participatory, generative, action research initiatives, workshops and events that contribute to addressing three fundamental questions relating to the role of design-led methods in supporting SMEs in their innovation journey. The research is interested in a, what innovation looks like to these SMEs; b, how innovative these SMEs are prepared to be; and c, what barriers exist that prevent them from innovating to the extent that they would like? The role-holder will work with a multidisciplinary team of co-investigators and postgraduate students from across the university and the collaborating partner universities along with external participant SMEs.

The successful applicant will have demonstrable action research expertise in a relevant design discipline and be confident to design and lead participatory research activities as well as authoring and publishing research findings in suitable academic venues.

Creative Fuse North East is funded by investment from both the European Regional Development Fund and the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC). This funding is matched with support from the five universities. Details of Creative Fuse can be found at http://www.creativefusene.org.uk/
