The internationally esteemed and highly successful Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki is Finland’s leading unit of research and teaching in Educational Sciences and Teacher Education. The study programme for Teacher in home economics at the Faculty of Educational Sciences is inviting applications for the position of

PROFESSOR IN HOME ECONOMICS PEDAGOGY

for a temporary substitute position for 1.1.2021 (or upon agreement) continuing until 31.12.2022.

The duties of the professor include research and development of teaching and learning in the field of home economics pedagogy and home economics. The professor is responsible for the pedagogical studies of subject teacher in home economy. The professor teaches in the study programme for teacher of home economy within the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in educational sciences. In addition, the professor’s duties include instruction in the field, supervision of theses and dissertations, and management and development of research in national and international networks. The professor also takes care of administrative duties.

Qualification requirements

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess high-level academic qualifications and experience in heading scientific research, as well as the ability to provide research-based teaching of high quality and supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall show evidence of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. The holder of professorship shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

The appointee must be competent in the language in which he or she provides instruction, in this case Finnish language. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.

Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, he or she must attain a level of Finnish proficiency suitable for everyday communication within three years of taking up the position.

Selection criteria

An individual recruited as a professor is expected to have strong academic merits and qualifications and be recognised as a significant opinion-leader in his or her own discipline.

When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience as well as scientific commissions, positions of trust and international relations. When considering the teaching qualifications of each applicant, attention will be focused on teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s leadership and interaction skills as well as activity in the academic community will also be taken into account.

Salary and benefits

The salary for the position is based on levels 8-9 of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee is paid a salary component based on personal performance. The gross monthly salary will be approximately 5,000€−7,000€ depending on the appointee’s scholarly qualifications and career stage. A 6-month probation period is applied.
