Full-time, fixed term (36 months)

This is a three-year position for a post-doctoral Research Fellow to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists (including clinical and non-clinical researchers) in the laboratory of Professor Felicity Gavins (Professor of Pharmacology), within the Centre for Inflammation Research and Translational Medicine (CIRTM) at Brunel University London. The CIRTM is an internationally recognised research centre within Brunel (directed by Professor Gavins) which aims to deliver excellence in all aspects of research, teaching and clinical translation. Programmes of research within the Centre are directed towards understanding the inflammatory and immune processes that underlie human health, disease and healing, with a focus on novel target identification for drug discovery and treatments for human disease

The successful candidate will join the internationally respected laboratory of Professor Gavins where they will work on a Royal Society Wolfson Foundation funded project focussing on ‘Targeting the Formyl Peptide Receptors to Promote Resolution Following Cerebral Ischaemia/Reperfusion Injury (I/RI)’. The goals will be to define pathophysiological responses to cerebral I/RI in diseases such as sickle cell disease, identify anti-inflammatory loops that control the Fpr2/ALX pathway to promote resolution post I/RI and to discover prognostic biomarkers for developing neuroprotective treatments.

The post holder will use novel imaging platforms (e.g. intravital microscopy) to study immune cell trafficking at a microvascular level. Close communications will occur with other existing groups within the CIRTM, across Brunel and on a global platform. This post will provide invaluable experience and an opportunity to work in an internationally respected laboratory. Main accountabilities & Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Undertake research focussed on targeting the Formyl Peptide Receptors to promote inflammation resolution following ischaemia reperfusion injury.
  • Identify, set-up and perform a number of different techniques to pursue the research objectives.
  • Training and assisting other members of the laboratory (such as students) in carrying out necessary experiments.
  • Presentation of research at internal (including lab meetings and seminars) and external meetings.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies.
  • Write manuscripts and contribute to the overall preparation of research for publications.
  • Contribute to the public engagement events.


This list is non-exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake other tasks that are expected within the remit of the post.

A strong background in inflammation and thrombosis is desirable. Experience in in vivo models of disease, molecular biology techniques and cell isolation are essential. An active home Office PIL is desirable. A PhD in an appropriate discipline (Pharmacology/Physiology/immunology or a related area) or attained equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience is essential for this role.
