The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer (education) in Modern African History, tenable for 20 months full-time from 1 January 2021, to replace Dr Vincent Hiribarren for the period of his secondment to the French Institute for Research in Africa.

The post-holder will specialize in Modern African History and contribute to departmental teaching in the subject. Core teaching responsibilities will be: to deliver entry-level teaching on the module 4AAH0001 Historical Skills, Sources and Approaches and on 4AAH1008 World History, 1870s-2000s; to convene and deliver the single semester 2nd year modules, 5AAH1023 Cultures of Kingship and Empire: Power and Pushback in Portuguese-speaking Africa and 5AAH1024 The History of Portuguese-Speaking Africa 1960 to the Present, and the two-semester module, 5AAH3010 Themes in Colonial and Postcolonial African History; to co-convene with another member of the department at least one of the 3rd year thematic modules 6AAH4005 Nations and 6AAH4012 Authority; and to teach the MA module 7AAH5020: The Power of Naija: Culture and Politics in Postcolonial Nigeria. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to the administration and pastoral provision of the Department of History.

Applications are welcome from candidates with expertise in Modern African History and the ability to teach the modules outlined above. Candidates should have submitted a PhD by the date of appointment.

Skills, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria

  • PhD in Modern African History submitted or awarded
  • First or upper-second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
  • Excellent research expertise in Modern African History
  • Ability to convene, teach and assess modules relating to African history across the undergraduate curriculum
  • Ability to engage students and support their learning
  • Excellent administrative and interpersonal skills, a collaborative ethos, and capacity for team-working
  • Excellent track record in research relative to career stage
  • Experience of teaching and supporting students at UG level
  • Ability to teach the modules listed in the role profile

Experience of teaching and supporting students at PG level

Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be held in late November. The selection process will include a presentation to the panel and an interview.
