The laboratory of Tenure Track Assistant Professor Thomas McWilliams studies the regulation of autophagy and mitochondrial homeostasis in tissue development, disease and repair. We seek to recruit a

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN or LABORATORY COORDINATOR

in the Stem Cells and Metabolism Research Program (STEMM). We have a strong multidisciplinary ethos and employ a diverse range of approaches in the laboratory. The successful candidate will support frontline research for ongoing projects in the McWilliams lab.

Embedded within the STEMM programme of the Research Programs Unit, our laboratory has close collaborative links with other leading laboratories in mitochondrial medicine, neurogenetics, stem cell biology and metabolism. In addition, we collaborate with leading laboratories from around the world. We are well resourced with access to state of the art equipment and core facilities.

Your Tasks:

Your experimental tasks include routine molecular biology (genomic DNA extraction, PCR, genotyping, plasmid preparation, RNA extraction, RT-qPCR, virus preparation), histology and mammalian cell culture, In addition, you will be responsible for ordering, invoicing and the day-to-dat maintaince and organization of the lab.

The ideal candidate is detail orientated, highly motivated and enjoys organizational tasks. Experience in animal research is a significant advantage. Knowledge of primary cell culture (especially primary or iPS-derieved neurons) is also highly desirable. Familiarity with one or more of the following is also advantageous: biochemistry, neuroscience, cell biology, metabolism or developmental biology.

A good command of English (written and spoken) is important, and native proficiency in Finnish is advantageous. We particularly appreciate individuals who work well with others and have a collegial, supportive and adaptive attitude. Basic IT literacy is also required (e.g. routine use of MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint; Online Databases).

You should already have or expect to recieve one of the following: Laboratory technician, laboratory analyst or laboratory engineer education; or MSc in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. neuroscience, developmental biology, physiology, molecular medicine, etc.). Equivalent professional experience within relevant environments is also accepted.

A trial period of 6 months will be applied. Salary and position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is funded for 12 months with possibility for further extension. The position is available immediately.
