Role Description

Have you recently submitted your thesis for examination or just had your viva? Are you looking to take the next step in your career? Do you have an idea for a research project you are looking to pursue? If the answer is yes to the above, then the Cranfield University EPSRC Doctoral Prize fellowship could be for you.

The EPSRC Doctoral Prize fellowship enables universities to recruit and retain the very best newly qualified PhD students to help them launch their research careers. This is a fixed term, fully-funded, two year contract to help launch your academic career.

To be eligible for the EPSRC Doctoral Prize fellowship, applicants must have recently received support for their doctoral studies from EPSRC in the form of fees and/or stipend or they must be a recent Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) incorporated student in an EPSRC CDT. Projects need to align with EPSRC’s remit.

The recipient must have submitted their doctoral thesis before the EPSRC Doctoral Prize support can begin.

In order to be eligible for the EPSRC Doctoral Prize fellowship, candidates must:

  • Have submitted their thesis between 1 October 2019 and 31 October 2020
  • Obtained PhD or near completion
  • Have received an EPSRC funded PhD (e.g. DTP, CDT, iCASE) at a UK university
  • Suggest a project within EPSRC’s remit
  • Identify a suitable project mentor who is not your PhD supervisor (only applicable to applicants who studied for their PhD at Cranfield)

The position is funded externally by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Prize. Non-salary costs are available for research expenses (e.g. facilities use, consumables), travel (e.g. collaborator visits, conferences) and outreach activities (e.g. public engagement, knowledge transfer). A guide figure for non-salary costs is £10k per annum.

Brilliant, talented researchers who are passionate about research and meet the eligibility criteria are invited to apply.

As the UK’s only exclusively postgraduate university, Cranfield’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships is creating leaders in technology and management globally. Our distinctive expertise is in our deep understanding of technology and management and how these work together to benefit the world.

We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.  To find out more, please visit https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/about/working-at-cranfield/diversity

For an informal discussion, please contact Michelle Carter, Research Governance and Programme Manager, on (T): +44 (0)1234 758029 or (E): m.carter@cranfield.ac.uk

Please include the following attachments during the application process:

  • A detailed curriculum vitae, including full academic history, research, and publications to date; details of the source of your EPSRC degree funding (DTP/CDT/iCASE)
  • A signed short statement from the relevant Cranfield PVC School/Director of Theme indicating how the fellowship plans would fit with the School/Theme’s strategy

Post-doctoral Fellowships are awarded on a non-fEC basis (i.e. only directly-incurred costs are eligible. Estates/infrastructure/indirect costs are excluded). You should specify your plans for the use of funds and discuss your application with the PVC School/Director of Theme, where the work is to be carried out prior to submitting your application.

It is your responsibility to contact your two referees and the relevant signatory, in advance of the closing date, to make them aware of your application, request a supporting statement and to discuss your research area.

Applications will be reviewed by the Directors of Research Selection Committee who will decide the final shortlist, conduct interviews and award the EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship.
