Job Details

The Department of War Studies is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Professor Claudia Aradau on a European Research Council Consolidator Grant SECURITY FLOWS ('Enacting border security in the digital age: Political lives of data forms, flows and frictions'). The project analyses the epistemic, political, practical and ethical implications of the increased production of data and data analytics for border security. It proposes to develop a systematic and innovative analysis of how data is generated in border encounters, how it circulates among actors and how it shapes the knowledge and practices of border security and non-governmental actors, and migrants themselves. The empirical research focuses on selected sites across the Central, Eastern or Western European migration routes. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work with the Principal Investigator and colleagues to support the achievement of project objectives. They will be involved in theoretical discussions, conducting empirical research, contributing to project publications, and disseminating finding to a variety of publics. There will be opportunities to develop their own interests as part of the project.

The successful candidate will be expected to have excellent knowledge of qualitative research methods, particularly ethnographic and interviewing methods, prior experience with conducting fieldwork, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. They will also have knowledge of one or more of the following fields: critical security studies, border/migration studies, critical International Relations, science and technology studies or critical data studies. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a PhD in a relevant discipline (International Relations, political science, anthropology, sociology or STS). The successful candidate will have language expertise in one or more of the following languages: Arabic, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Turkish. They will benefit from working in an intensive research environment, mentoring, career development and opportunities to develop their own research interests.

King's College London is committed to creating an inclusive environment that promotes equality of opportunity for everyone in its community. As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitable qualified persons.
