About the position

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the group of Mineral Production and HSE within the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP). The successful applicant will be engaged in an EIT Raw Materials project focusing on laboratory and pilot-scale beneficiation (flotation) of copper ore. The PhD position is for a three-year period funded by EIT Raw Materials project. The main objective of the project is to boost innovation in the field of flotation of minerals through the development of the new reflux flotation cell.

The successful applicant will be engaged in the EIT Raw Materials project New Reflux Flotation Cell Technology Upscaling for Ore Flotation.

The main scope of the project is the development and execution of Reflux Flotation Cell test work and comparative studies with conventional lab and pilot scale flotation equipment on a Cu ore, including the investigation of water consumption and entrainment (e.g. material balances, solids concentrations, flow rates, particle size distributions), chemical consumption and water qualities, mineralogy and chemistry of feed and products of the various experimental setups.

You will report to Head of Department.

Duties of the position

The main duties and responsibilities include developing and conducting flotation test work by using statistical (experimental) as well as mineralogical and chemical studies (a geometallurgical investigation of feeds and products in different experimental setups).

Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in mineral processing, surface and colloid chemistry, or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Other required selection criteria

  • Background in or good knowledge of particle technology, particularly separation processes
  • Good written and oral English language skills

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience with flotation test work
  • Prior experience in dynamic process modelling and process design
  • A strong commitment to safe work practices in the laboratory and field
  • Good work ethic, time management, and organizational skills

Personal characteristics

The successful candidate must be

  • enthusiastic and highly motivated to complete the PhD in time
  • positive with good communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering  (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phiv) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
