The Department

About the Department Durham Geography is a vibrant community of over 60 academic staff (approximately equally divided between physical and human geography), a graduate school of around 100 research and 40 taught postgraduate students and more than 750 undergraduates.

It has ranked as one of the top ten in the world for 7 consecutive years according to the QS rankings and is recurrently ranked in the top handful of programmes in the UK by various league tables (currently 1st in the Times Good University Guide 2nd in the Guardian University Guide and 3rd in the Complete University Guide).

Our aim is to sustain and support hubs of leadership in geographical scholarship – broadly conceived. We will maintain our reputation for theoretical and conceptual innovation so that we are shaping and leading debates globally.

We will continue to engage concepts and materials from across disciplinary boundaries to renew geographical scholarship and bring geographical perspectives to bear in other domains. Our research is organised around our seven research clusters: Culture & Economy, Geographies of Life, Politics-State-Space, Urban Worlds, Ice Sheets & Sea Level, Catchments and Rivers, and Hazards and Surface Change.

Across these clusters we engage in debates that move beyond disciplinary boundaries and actively engage with collaborators within and beyond the discipline, from the sciences, social sciences and humanities, in University Research Institutes (such as the Institute for Hazard Risk and Resilience, the Durham Energy Institute and the Institute for Medical Humanities) and Centres (such as the Centre for Visual Arts and Cultures). Our staff collaborate with colleagues in many other disciplines in Durham, and with other geographers and interdisciplinary teams internationally.

The department fosters a lively research culture, supporting workshops and events which draw in international guests and mobilise the talents of our doctoral students. It provides financial support to develop collaborations and projects, be they for seeking funding or creating outputs. The Role

Applications are invited for a 24-month Postdoctoral Research Associate (Social Sciences, qualitative methods) to work on the ESRC-funded project ‘Fraying Ties? Networks, Territory and Transformation in the UK oil sector.’ Led by Professor Gavin Bridge, the project investigates the ongoing transformation of the UK's strategic position within global oil networks. The way the UK is 'plugged into' global oil networks is changing, in the context of a global shift in oil demand away from Europe, declining production in the North Sea, and growing action by governments and society to accelerate low carbon transition. Using social science methods, the project generates new knowledge about the changing role of UK territorial assets for international oil firms; and about the diversity, depth and durability of ties between these international firms and the UK.

The successful applicant will work with Professor Gavin Bridge (Durham University) and with Dr Gisa Weszkalnys (London School of Economics) to deliver one of the project’s four work streams. They will join an interdisciplinary project team (economic geography, political science, anthropology) that also includes researchers at Platform (a third-sector organisation, based in London) and at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. The post involves fieldwork to conduct interviews and focus group research, and some limited participant observation at industry conferences and events. Travel will be primarily in the UK.

Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will make a key contribution to Work Stream 3 (Practices, Norms and Logics: case studies of transformation) which uses case study methods to investigate the practices through which oil firms with an international footprint establish and maintain ties to the UK. We anticipate case studies will focus on 2-3 key areas at the nexus of territory and international investment, with the focus determined in part by the skills and interests of the applicant. For example, candidate case studies include the evolution of the offshore licensing regime on the UK Continental Shelf, the development of oil trading practices in the UK, continuities and ruptures in offshore labour practices, and the development of an international supply chain headquartered in the UK. Each case will examine the intersection of actors, practices, institutions and values, and use a combination of desk-based methods, interviews, focus groups, and other qualitative methods. The successful applicant will be expected to organise and conduct case study research under the direction of Dr Weszkalnys who leads Work Stream 3. They will have responsibility for gathering and analysing data, and drafting reports and papers based on the research as part of the overall goals of the project. 

The successful applicant will also contribute towards project management (Work Stream 4), including the preparation of outputs, liaison with stakeholders, and information dissemination in support of the project’s scientific and impact goals.

  • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
  • To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
  • To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator / Co Investigator.
  • To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.
  • To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator  / Co Investigator.
  • To work with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and other colleagues in the research group, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator / Co Investigator and offering creative or innovative solutions.
  • To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
  • To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.
  • To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors and students as appropriate.
  • To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
  • To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline.
  • To engage in continuing professional development by participation in the undergraduate or postgraduate teaching programmes or by membership of departmental committees, etc. and by attending relevant training and development courses.

This post is fixed term for 24 months which reflects the availability of funding in Years 2 and 3 of the project. The post-holder will be employed to work on a research project, directed by Professor Bridge and Dr Weszkalnys. While this means the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in her/his own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

The Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • A good first degree.
  • A PhD (or be close to submission) in Anthropology, Human Geography, or a related subject.
  • Experience in conducting high quality academic research.
  • Experience in using qualitative data-gathering techniques, including organising and conducting research interviews.
  • Experience in researching issues related to energy and/or natural resource development and familiarity with the oil and/or gas sector relevant to the project
  • Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-ranked journals.
  • Demonstrable ability to present research papers at conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community.
  • Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings.
  • Qualitative social science research skills suitable for political-economic and/or cultural analysis.
  • Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Ability to engage critically and creatively with relevant conceptual and methodological frameworks in anthropology and human geography
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career.
  • A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career.
  • Demonstrable ability to develop research proposals and designs in collaboration with other academics.
  • Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including active participation in research meetings.
