Research Assistant, Sustainable Consumption and Production

About the position

The Industrial Ecology Programme (IndEcol), Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a research assistant to support the modeling of sustainable consumption and production within the design and analysis of potential Sustainable Development Pathways.

The work involves data acquisition and processing, modeling, and analysis/display of model results of the demand for industrial production and the employment, environmental impacts and resource use associated with this industrial production.

The work relates to three ongoing projects, JPI Axis SHAPE, NAVIGATE, and Resource Efficiency and Climate Change (RECC) carried out in collaboration with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Yale University.

The Research Assistant will directly assist Professor Edgar Hertwich and Richard Wood in their contributions to these projects.

The Head of Department is Professor Terese Løvås. The position’s supervisor is Professor Edgar Hertwich.

Duties of the position

  • Data collection and analysis
  • Programming in MatLab or python
  • Modelling, analysis of results, and documentation
  • Interaction with project partners

Required selection criteria

  • A Master`s degree in industrial ecology, informatics, economics, engineering or natural science.

The position as Research Assistant should give you the opportunity to gain insight into scientific or artistic work and method. The assignments are at an academic level and must consist of scientific or artistic assistance.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

  • Analytical and quantitative skills, such as statistics, input-output economics, life cycle assessment
  • Competence in data acquisition and processing
  • Relevant programming and software skills (e.g., MatLab, Python, GAMS, R, GIS, or similar)
  • written and oral English language skills

Preferred selection criteria

  • It is considered a strength of the candidate also speaks a Scandinavian language
  • It is considered a strength if the candidate has some prior knowledge of industrial ecology, energy system models, statistics, or systems engineering

Salary and conditions

Research assistants are remunerated in code 1018,1019 and 1020 depending on competence. The duration of this position is for a period of up to 16 months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
