Job Description
The Department of Medical Education is seeking to appoint teaching staff to join the Medical Communication and Study Skills Unit. The appointees will contribute to teaching undergraduate medical students principally in the PreMed programme – years 1 and 2 of the six year MD.
Lecturers in Medical Communication and Study Skills currently teach on six different courses in the PreMed programme. These include a series of four consecutive one-semester courses called Professional Practise and Communication 1 – 4, which focus on communication skills, ethics, and professionalism, with additional input provided by specialised faculty in the areas of lifestyle and health promotion; and two further courses in the first semester: Language and Literacy for Medicine, which is a focused reading and writing skills course; and General and Human Biology, where input is limited to learning and practising use of scientific terminology, and oral presentation skills.` The appointee can expect to contribute to the teaching of these six courses, in addition to providing writing support to a group of approximately tutees in both first year and second year. Students are expected to produce appropriately referenced academic writing in APA style, as well as focussed reflective writing assignments. We have extended individualised teaching of writing skills by improving support and guidance given outside of class. Furthermore, the appointee would be expected to train in Problem Based and Team Based Learning and eventually facilitate PBL in the third or fourth year of the programme. Other duties include assessing oral presentations; writing and vetting examination questions; invigilation; and such other tasks as may be necessary from time to time. The teaching load will varies from week to week. Class sizes also vary. Typically there are approximately 40 - 50 male students in each of the first two years, with around 80 - 140 females, although numbers vary from year to year. Class sizes in courses taught by Medical Communication and Study Skills varies: sometimes cohorts are split into groups of 20 – 25, but occasionally they are taught in larger groups.
