About the position

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has a vacancy for a PhD candidate at the Water and Wastewater group as part of the Horizon 2020 project Wider Uptake. The period of employment is 3 years. Upon completion of all program requirements, the candidate will be awarded a PhD in civil engineering. The Water and Wastewater group comprise of 6 permanent faculty positions, 3 technicians, and between 15-20 PhD and PostDocs.

Wider Uptake (https://www.sintef.no/projectweb/wider-uptake/) will facilitate industrial symbiosis by co-development of a roadmap towards wider Uptake of water-smart solutions for wastewater reuse and resource recovery. The research program's overall goal is to demonstrate innovative technical solutions that optimize water reuse, resource recovery, and energy utilization in selected industry settings. Specific tasks include the development of monitoring and control schemes to adequately manage the health and quality risks associated with the reuse of treated wastewater and recovered resources.

The position reports to a professor.

Duties of the position

This position is part of the project “Wider Uptake” funded by the Horizon 2020 Program of the European Union. The duties of the position are thereby defined by this project.

• Development of procedure for monitoring and control of health and quality risks
• Research tasks for the case study
• Preparation of journal and conference papers
• Presentation of results at international conferences

Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in civil engineering with a specialization in water or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Other required selection criteria

• Background Basic knowledge on risk assessment methods
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

Preferred selection criteria

• Basic knowledge of EU regulations for the use of recycled water, microbiological and chemical standards for wastewater and resource recovery
• Familiar with online sensor technology
• Norwegian language is an asset
• Laboratory experience 

Personal characteristics

• Ability to work both individually and in a team environment and a high level of personal responsibility
• Ability to meet deadlines and produce work of a consistently high standard
• Excellent communication skills in scientific writing and oral presentation

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in [subject area] (Link to website, if applicable) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.
