About the position

IAT offers education at Master level in Architecture and Sustainable Architecture and carries out academic research related to Quality of Architecture, Architectural Transformation, Architectural History, Structures, Form, Light, Colour, and Environmental Impact of Architecture.

The research center Zero Emission Neighborhood (ZEN) https://fmezen.no/ and the Light & Colour Centre https://www.ntnu.edu/iat/lightandcolour, both belonging to IAT, are the most relevant professional groups for the position at the department.

The position is a part of a strategic initiative to strengthen the link between academic research at the faculty, modern visualization methods and techniques, and architectural practice. The position is related to the research group Energy and Environment.

You will report to the head of the department.

Duties of the position

The candidate is supposed to carry out research under professional supervision resulting with a series of scientific articles, three of them in renown scientific journals, and aiming at a PhD-dissertation.

• Partly contribute with her/his knowledge to the teaching at the IAT, e.g. in the course Light and lighting or Light and colour.
• Contribute to good condition of the laboratories (ROMLAB and Daylight Lab.).
• Contribute to a friendly, supportive, and inclusive working environment in the research groups and in the department.

Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in architecture or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

• Good skills and experience with architectural simulation and visualization tools.

Preferred selection criteria

• Experience or affinity with VR-visualization methods connected to research or architectural practice written and spoken proficiency in English
• Specialization in lighting design
• Knowledge and use of colour systems and/or colour simulation

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is three years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in architecture  https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phaar within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

About the application

• The formal academic requirements for the position
• The significance, originality, relevance, feasibility and potential impact of the proposed research
• The quality of the scientific papers and other work presented in the portfolio
• The academic competence of the applicant and the applicant's personal suitability within the context of the department's educational environment

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews and discussions about their project proposals. The top candidates might be offered the opportunity to revise and improve their project proposals in dialogue with the supervisor within a second deadline before the recruitment process is finalized.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability.
