Senior University Lecturer in Machine Learning with some emphasis on biomedical applications

Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

The activities of the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics are centred around three main areas: Astronomy and Astrophysics; Theoretical Particle Physics; and Computational Biology and Biological Physics. Our research is driven by our curiosity to understand reality, from the smallest of particles to the largest astronomical structures, as well as the structure of Life itself. We have a strong international position in all three areas, and we are actively working on further strengthening our international profile.

The activities have as common denominator analysis of data, theoretical modeling and development of algorithms/software. The research within Computational Biology and Biological Physics is focused around machine learning for clinical applications, biomolecular physics, bio-nano physics and systems biology.

Job description
The main tasks for the position concern undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as research. The research component should be at least 40% of full-time. The tasks and the partition between research and teaching can be subject to change over time.

The successful candidate is expected to lead and actively participate in teaching within machine learning. This includes further development of the existing basic course as well as development of new courses within sub-fields of great demand. In addition, she/he is expected to participate in teaching of basic undergraduate physics courses. Also, supervision of bachelor and master projects is expected together with PhD supervision within the field of machine learning and its applications. Participation in the outreach activities of the department is also an important part of the job.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct interdisciplinary research where development and applications of machine learning towards biomedical data are in focus.

Eligibility
Those qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer are a person who has demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve (according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 4).

It is required that the applicant holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics or another area of high relevance for the position and that she/he is qualified for an Associate Professor.

Documented experience in teaching within the area of artificial neural networks and deep learning, as well as basic undergraduate physics courses, are also required. Furthermore, documented ability of supervising students at PhD, Master and Bachelor levels is required. Experience of administrative tasks within undergraduate teaching is an advantage.

It is also an advantage if the applicant has experience and skills that will further develop cross-disciplinary research where development and applications of machine learning towards biomedical data are in focus. Scientific merits will be mostly judged based upon the quality of peer-reviewed publications. It is an advantage if the candidate has experience as an applicant or co-applicant in grant applications as well as experience from participation in cross-disciplinary research projects.

The applicant should present her/his current research as well as a research plan for the upcoming three years.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules.
