DEPARTMENT OF SYSTEMATIC AND HISTORICAL THEOLOGY

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Systematic and Historical Theology (SHT), with a special focus in one or more of the following: Black Theology of Liberation, Feminist/Womanist Theologies, and Christian  Ethics;
  • Conducting scholarly research in SHT;
  • Supervising master’s and doctoral students;
  • Mentoring students at undergraduate level;
  • Performing academic administration and management;
  • Performing other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

The post level will be determined based on the candidate’s professional portfolio. The following standards are an indication of the applicable post level.

Senior Lecturer:

  • A relevant doctoral degree;
  • At least 3 years’ tertiary experience or relating teaching experience;
  • At least 3-5 articles in a variety of accredited journals;
  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision would be an advantage.

Associate Professor:

  • A relevant doctoral degree;
  • At least 5 years’ tertiary experience;
  • At least 6-8 publications in a variety of accredited journals;
  • Evidence of successful research Master’s supervision (at least successfully completed) and if possible evidence of successful Doctoral supervision;
  • Established nationally as a scholar and researcher.

Professor:

  • A relevant doctoral degree;
  • At least 8 years’ tertiary teaching experience;
  • At least 10-15 publications in a variety of accredited journals of which 5 of the publication should be ISI/IBSS journals;
  • Evidence of successful research Master’s supervision (at least 10 successfully completed) and evidence of at least 2 successful doctoral supervisions;
  • Established nationally and internationally as a scholar and researcher.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Membership of at least one scholarly society related to SHT;
  • Proven record of supervision to completion of master’s and doctoral students;
  • Community involvement; NRF rating will serve as a strong advantage for the Associate Professor/Professor levels;
  • Experience of curriculum development and record of curriculum innovation.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
