At TU Dresden, Faculty of Psychology, Institute of General Psychology, Biopsychology and Methods of Psychology, the Chair of Neuroimaging invites applications for a

Research Associate / PhD Student

(Subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

with 65 % of the fulltime weekly hours. The position will start on 01.10.2020 and is limited until 30.06.2024. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (WissZeitVG). The position aims at obtaining further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).

The position is part of the CRC 940 ‘Volition and Cognitive Control’ (https://tu-dresden.de/bereichsuebergreifendes/sfb940?set_language=en), project A9 “Towards a neurocomputational account of meta-control based on Bayesian inference in a context-specific hierarchy of time scales”, supervised by the Chair of Neuroimaging. The CRC was established in 2012 by the German Research Foundation and will be funded for the next four years with approx. 10 million Euros. The CRC aims at identifying the cognitive and neuronal mechanism, which underlie the volitional control of goal-directed actions as well as its dysfunctions in selected mental disorders.

Tasks: The goal is to experimentally test predictions of neuroscientific, computational models of goal-directed actions and meta-control. This position is ideal to work as an experimenter in an interdisciplinary group of researchers, where computational modelling will be used to generate experimental hypotheses. It is expected to plan and perform behavioural and neuroimaging experiments, data analysis, collaborate with computational neuroscientists and prepare manuscripts. Independent research and publication activities are highly appreciated.

Requirements: university degree (master or diploma) in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Computational Neuroscience, Medicine or similar; strong interest to work at the interface between computational and experimental neuroscience. Background in conducting and analysing neuroimaging data, e.g. functional magnetic resonance imaging, is of advantage. Ideally, the candidate shall have programming skills in Matlab or Python and a documented interest in computational modelling and/or cognitive neuroscience methods.

The TU Dresden provide an outstanding scientific infrastructure and ideal environment for interdisciplinary cooperation. For computational work, the CRC has access to the Centre for Information Services and High Performance Computing at TU Dresden. Experiments will be performed at the Neuroimaging Centre Dresden (https://www.nic-tud.de). The Neuroimaging Centre is equipped with a research-only MRI scanner (Siemens 3T), MRI-compatible EEG and eye tracking, and a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) unit. All experimental facilities are supported by experienced physics and IT staff.
