The Transport Systems Theme has the vision to be leaders in delivering safe, sustainable and efficient transport around the world. Drawing on a long heritage in automotive and aerospace, the seven Centres that currently form the theme cover topics ranging from autonomous vehicles to human performance; and from integrated vehicle health management to digital aviation. Our activities have won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize twice – for our work in aviation safety in 2011 and our flying laboratory and classrooms in 2019.

Reporting directly to the Director of Theme, we are seeking to make an appointment into the new role of Transport Systems Development Manager.

The successful candidate will play an important leadership role in business development, with direct responsibility for growing the level of industrial, academic and government participation, nationally and internationally across the transport sector.

This critical role will have two primary areas of focus, one as commercial manager for the Integrated Vehicle Health Management Centre for approximately 40% of time, and the remaining 60% in theme-wide business development and programme management. This will involve collaborative working to define, bid for and launch major research projects that utilise our unique research capabilities as well as programme management of new facilities where appropriate.

The Development Manager will also have responsibility for managing key stakeholder relationships with companies who will benefit from wider engagement with the University (for example, Boeing).

The successful candidate will hold a Master’s level qualification in a relevant discipline or possess equivalent significant experience in a relevant field and senior role. They will also have a proven track record of securing / growing new business in a relevant domain. Technical knowledge of a field relevant to the Transport Systems Theme would also be an advantage, though not essential.

In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key position, and to supportworld leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.

At Cranfield we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. To further demonstrate our commitment to progressing gender diversity in STEM, we are members of WES & Working Families, and sponsors of International Women in Engineering Day.

Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that minority ethnic groups are currently underrepresented within the university and so we actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from these groups.

We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role. Find out more here.

For an informal discussion, please contact Professor Graham Braithwaite, Director of Transport Systems, on (T); +44 (0)1234 75 4252 or (E); g.r.braithwaite @cranfield.ac.uk
