The Faculty of Health Sciences has a vibrant research culture that is internationally recognised. We are engaged in developing practical solutions to the health challenges in our local and global communities. Our researchers conduct cross-disciplinary research between schools, industry groups, cooperative research centres, institutes and units. We have areas of research strength in cancer, ageing, neurodevelopmental conditions, mental health, neurodegeneration, vascular and metabolic disorders and inflammation and infectious diseases. 

Your new role

This exciting new position is responsible for proactively identifying funding opportunities and providing high-level assistance in the preparation of funding applications to competitive grant schemes, primarily from the Australian Government’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF). Drive the assembly of competitive research teams at short-notice, using your established network to identify leaders and collaborators in the field. Play a key part in supporting the drafting of grant applications, addressing the relevant criteria and establishing the appropriate linkages for highly competitive submissions. Act as the central point of communication and knowledge regarding general MRFF enquiries, and work collaboratively with all levels of professional and academic staff to streamline MRFF processes and develop capability in this funding stream.

In this role you will:

• Provide intellectual and strategic support to the internal Grant Success Panel regarding MRFF opportunities.
• Maintain an active scan of new MRFF opportunities and monitor all MRFF announcements.
• Provide information and advice to the Faculty, including Schools, Research Institutes and individuals on MRFF research policy, funding schemes and research best practice.
• Design and develop content, run research development seminars and workshops that inform about MRFF initiatives.
• With relevant staff, develop Curtin’s MRFF research strategy direction.
• Advise on the optimal presentation of MRFF research grant applications.
• Assist, support and track the development of major bids from conceptualisation to project start-up.
• Develop a strong collaborative relationship with the Research Office at Curtin.
• Help researchers develop relationships with local and interstate collaborators, government, business and industry partners, and other stakeholders that align with the MRFF research area.
• Encourage client feedback and undertake outcome assessment as a basis for continuous improvement.

Experience required:

• A relevant tertiary degree with extensive experience in a similar role, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
• High-level understanding of grant processes in a research environment, together with a solid understanding of research capability across Western Australian research institutes and centres.
• Highly developed networking skills with an established, strong network within the Australian research community, across multiple disciplines, states and institutions.
• Proven ability to drive the assembly of competitive research teams at short-notice.
• Experience and skills in grant writing, and the development of key strategies to address application criteria.
• Exceptional leadership and management skills, and the ability to lead initiatives and manage complex programs in a multi-institutional framework.
• Interest in supporting and enabling high quality research, and proven ability to provide high-level conceptual and analytical advice.
• Understanding of metrics of success in research applications, and possess advanced computational skills.
• Ability to work cooperatively and effectively within a small team, and to communicate effectively with both internal & external stakeholders at all levels and with cross cultural sensitivity.
• Experience in applying for and securing MRFF and or health related category 1 grant funding opportunities.
