Research Associate, ARAS

  • Based in the School of Health Sciences, located in the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) building at City West campus
  • Part-time (0.7) to full-time fraction negotiable, minimum of twelve (12) months fixed term contract
  • Salary range: $88,851 - $95,253 pro rata per annum (plus super)

About the Job

The Research Associate will be a member of the Australian Centre for Precision Health and contribute to the research activities relating to the project titled, ‘Does the Lifestyle Modify the Association between Genetic Risk and Cancer Incidence’. The project aims are to develop population-level strategies to offset genetic risk of cancer through modifiable risk factors.

The project is funded by Australian Government’s Medical Research Future Fund as part of the Rapid Applied Research Translation program, with this project being part of the work undertaken by Health Translation South Australia.

The Australian Centre for Precision Health (ACPreH) is a newly created flagship research concentration and is part of the University of South Australia Cancer Research Institute located at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. It brings together a multidisciplinary group of leading experts in genomics, population health and evidence translation to create the next generation of solutions.

The Research Associate will conduct statistical analyses as part of a team to inform population-level cancer prevention and health promotion policy, and actively contribute to research translation of results via communication and dissemination of the results to relevant organisations.

Skills and Experience

Do you hold a Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field e.g. quantitative genetics, statistics, bioinformatics, computer programming, mathematics, machine learning, epidemiology, pharmacy or other relevant areas, along with knowledge and an understanding of the principles and concepts related to disease risk prediction and prevention? We are seeking an individual with experience with statistical analysis of quantitative large-scale data including genetic information and handling large data sets, advanced skills on analyses of large-scale data with Stata, R and/or other relevant programming languages and the willingness and self-drive to learn new software.

High-level verbal and written communication skills and organisational skills, along with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse and multi-disciplinary research team as well as work independently are essential in this role.

Experience in using programs related to genome-wide association studies, genomic prediction, Mendelian randomization, and/or gene-environment interaction and experience with large public databases for data analyses, e.g. UK Biobank, dbGaP, UK10k or WTCCC are desirable.
