About the position

The Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities (ZEN Centre) hosted by the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management is looking for a PhD Candidate in ‘Regulatory Challenges and Opportunities in Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities’.

This is a temporary educational position which will provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD.

The position is connected to the PhD-program at the Faculty of Economics and Management and the faculty will be your employer.

The Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management is organized into six sections:

• Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research
• Health, Safety and Environment Management
• Strategy and Business Development
• Operations Management
• Experts in Teamwork
• Section of Economics and management (Campus Gjøvik)
• The PhD Candidate will be a part of the Section for Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research and will cooperate closely with the Section for Operations Management.

Background

Information about the Centre and background for the position

The Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities (ZEN Centre) is a Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) funded by the Research Council of Norway and the consortium partners. The main objective of the ZEN Centre is to develop knowledge, competitive products and solutions that will lead to realization of sustainable buildings and neighbourhoods that have zero emissions of greenhouse gases related to their production, operation and transformation. The ZEN Centre is a follow-up of the Research Centre on Zero Emission Buildings.

The position as a PhD Candidate will be administratively located at the ZEN Centre, Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (IØT). Globally as well as on the national and local levels, goals and specific targets are set up to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and secure future supply of energy. Several innovative solutions are being developed and tested out in best practice projects in order to reach these goals and targets. However, there are examples that innovative solutions may conflict with current regulations, which is potentially slowing down the transition to the zero emission society. Regulation hampering ZEN projects may be linked to different but related topics, such as energy trade and exchange, urban planning, environmental policy, innovation, public procurement and regional development, and municipal regulation is typically embedded in higher levels of national and EU regulations.

The PhD project aims to explore innovative solutions for Zero Emission Neighbourhoods, in particular to the consequences of regulations that are slowing down or stopping sustainable innovations. In addition, he/she will work to identify possible solutions to these challenges. The research will be connected to related work within the Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities (www.fmezen.no).

Main duties and responsibilities

The PhD Candidate will be part of the research team in workpackage 2: Policy measures, innovation and business models on the topic: ‘Regulatory Challenges and Opportunities in Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities’.

The candidate will in particular address regulatory challenges and incentives affecting ZEN projects that implement innovative solutions also related to market development and design. The PhD Candidate will also collaborate with researchers in other work packages. In the ZEN centre, 9 pilot areas are available for research, and relevant research questions can be found and addressed in cooperation with the consortium partners.

The research should pursue one or more of the following tasks:

• Identify and develop an overview of innovative solutions in ZEN and potential conflicting regulations
• Develop an understanding of corresponding regulatory issues on an international level
• Develop and test potential solutions to overcome regulatory obstacles

Required selection criteria

• The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Industrial Economics and Technology Management, or equivalent education equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
• English language fluency (spoken and written) is required

Factors that will contribute positively to the evaluation and that should be documented in the application:

• Experience with research and practice based work related to innovation or transition theory applied in a zero emission context, will be highly valued.
• It will also be highly valued if the candidate has knowledge of or experience with applying or interpreting relevant areas of regulations or regulative systems.
• Much of the data collection will be made in Norwegian companies, and proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is an advantage.

Personal qualities such as academic team player, creative, analytical, self-driven, flexible and engaged scholar will be emphasised.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, remunerated at gross NOK 479 600,- per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

This position is to be hired for a period of 3 years, starting as soon as possible in the autumn of 2020..

The position is connected to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Economics and Management and the faculty will be your employer. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Faculty of Economics and Management, Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (https://www.ntnu.no/iot).

As a PhD Candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.

Some travelling is required to fill the position.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant, as well as the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.
Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
