About the Faculty of Arts - School of Historical and Philosophical Studies

The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies was formed in 2011 comprising the programs of History, History and Philosophy of Science, Philosophy, Classics and Archaeology, and the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation and The Program in Jewish Culture and Society.

The School further explores multi-disciplinary perspectives on ancient Graeco-Roman, Aegean and Near Eastern civilisations including ancient languages. Our Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation investigates new areas and innovative practices in instrumentation and analysis, policy and programs in the area of the preservation of cultural materials

About the role

This position is funded through the Hansen Trust, which has been established to transform the teaching of History at the University of Melbourne. The Hansen Trust aims to develop and instil a passion for History in students and the broader community, to deepen student engagement with their learning, to emphasise the importance and relevance of this field of study, and to support a range of initiatives in the Faculty of Arts to build excellence and innovation in teaching and learning programs.

The Hansen Lecturer in 20th century U.S. history will be responsible for teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and may be asked to assist in the development of new subjects and the re- development of existing subjects, as appropriate. Capacity to supervise Hons, M.A. and Ph.D. students is required. The appointee will undertake research resulting in publications with leading publishers in the field and will apply for competitive research grants, foster engagement links with external networks/partners nationally and internationally and take on administrative tasks associated with the appointment and as assigned by the program and School.

About you

The Hansen Lecturer will be a History specialist in an area of 20th century U.S. history with capacity to also teach world, global, and international history. Preference may be given to applicants with the experience in teaching classes in U.S. and world history since 1945, the history of international relations and gender history.

The successful applicant will also have a strong record in research, have a capacity to attract research grants and/or consultancies, and a capacity to supervise theses by Honours and PhD students.
