About the position

We have a vacancy for two three-year PhD positions as part of the SFI Smart Maritime http://www.smartmaritime.no/

The main goal of the SFI Smart Maritime is oriented towards the greening of the maritime transport by developing new knowledge, methods and technologies as well as educating new professionals for maritime sector, thus enabling the Norwegian maritime cluster to maintain and further develop its position as world leading in environmentally friendly shipping. 

Achieving this requires both innovative use, improvement and combination of technologies that are not only energy and emission efficient, but also cost effective, thus supporting a strong competitive position for the Norwegian maritime industry.

You will report to your Supervising Professor.

Duties of the position

SFI Smart Maritime is divided into five work packages:

1. Feasibility studies
2. Hull and propeller optimization
3. Power systems and fuel
4. Ship system integration and validation
5. Environmental and economic due diligence

Detailed information about each work package is found on http://www.smartmaritime.no/. The current positions shall be within the topics of work packages 2, 3, or 4. The potential candidates are invited to state their interest in any of these three work packages.

Required selection criteria

• The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in [subject area] or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

• Good written and oral English language skills. Applicants from non-English speak countries outside Europe must present an official language test report. The acceptable tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A

Preferred selection criteria

• Experience and/or interest in experimental work and numerical analysis is beneficial for work packages 2 and 3, while for work package 4, systems analysis competence is preferred.

​Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years, without teaching duties.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Engineering within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
