Level A ($88,286 to $92,796) per annum plus an employer contribution of 9.5% superannuation will apply.

Fixed term position immediately available for a period of up to 2 years

Develop and test habitat suitability models for key water bird species in the Coorong, the large hypersaline estuary of the River Murray.

This exciting, interdisciplinary role is funded through the Goyder Institute Healthy Coorong, Healthy Basin project in collaboration with the South Australian State Government. Working in the School of Biological Sciences (Phill Cassey and Justin Brookes), the role involves researching with a team of scientists how Waterbirds are using the Coorong and adjacent wetlands, where you will develop habitat suitability models for key waterbird species in the Coorong. This project will use historical data to develop spatially explicit models that hind cast the distribution of habitat for waterbird species. You will also use measures of bird behaviour to determine habitat quality and use these as indicators of environmental change and response to management intervention.

The Coorong comprises two lagoons that stretch for 120km South East from the Murray Mouth to Salt Creek. There is a strong salinity gradient that shapes the habitat and alters species abundance and distribution.

The successful candidate will acquire baseline data on the waterbird distribution and abundance for developing habitat suitability models for key water bird species. These models will be integrated into a eco-hydrology modelling platform by project collaborators.

To be successful you will need:

  • PhD or equivalent qualification (or PhD thesis submitted) in Waterbird Ecology, Avian Behavioural Ecology, or a related field involving Spatial Science and Animal Movement
  • Record of research achievements, evidenced by publications in leading scientific journals, and contributions to international scientific conferences
  • Proficiency in bird identification and statistical modelling (e.g., in R software etc.)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, both under the direction of supervisors and as a project leader

Experience with bird tracking technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and behavioural study of bird populations is desirable.
