About the position
We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at the Department of Social Work.
The PhD candidate will conduct research in the interdisciplinary field of Social and Welfare Policy.
This is an internationally expanding field of research and education.
You will report to the Head of Department.
Duties of the position
The successful applicant will conduct quantitative research with emphasis on the latest trends regarding social and economic inequalities in Scandinavian welfare states. The candidate will be working within a project on the impact of welfare policy and taxation changes that took place in Scandinavian welfare states in the last decades (project title “Growth, Inequality and Mobility: evidence from Norway”). In particular, the project utilizes Norwegian register data to evaluate the impact of social transfers and redistribution on poverty and inequality measures. The candidate will become an active member of the research group on Migration and Welfare studies. The research group consists of internationally merited researchers within economics, sociology and social work.
Other duties are:
- undertake analysis and empirical research in close collaboration with the supervisor, colleagues from the research group and external collaborators.
- develop new approaches and skills and utilise these in the research.
- prepare papers for publication in academic and public policy journals and working papers.
- present research outputs at conferences, workshops and symposia.
- contribute to wider group, departmental activities including seminars and group meetings.
- teaching or other duties to the department (25%)
Required selection criteria
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in economics, sociology, political science, social policy, social work or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
Other required selection criteria:
- experience in quantitative analysis and statistical/econometric methods.
- very good competence with statistical, econometric, modelling, and/or database software (Stata, R).
- very good competence in computer and internet skills, and ability to understand and manipulate data.
Preferred selection criteria
- familiarity with and experience analyzing individual-level datasets relevant to the topics of social and economic inequality.
- demonstrable interest in and research experience around public policy responses to social and economic inequality.
- good written and oral English language skills

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 4 years (including teaching duties).
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in programme in Social Sciences (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phsv) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
