The School of Art and Design, founded in 1843 and part of the College of Art, Architecture, Design and Humanities, is one of the UK’s most well-established, renowned and respected creative institutions. Offering the experience of an art school whilst providing all the opportunities and support of a large university. Our subjects are ranked in the top 10 UK for Art and Design. Visual Arts is one of four Departments within the School and delivers courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and post graduate research level to c.600 students across two distinct subject areas: Fine Art and Design for Stage and Screen. The courses are highly successful with excellent student outcomes as reflected in the Guardian Subject rankings and our QS World Ranking.

Reporting to the Dean and engaging across the portfolio, our next Head of Department will have the opportunity to help move our creative thinking development forward, and of course, help more students launch their careers in the creative industries. The role requires an experienced academic leader with a passion for innovative pedagogy, student experience and quality as well as an understanding of the relationship between the department’s resources and our student outcomes. With an excellent knowledge of the creative industries and experience of leading change in higher education you will help build a strong profile of the Department both nationally and internationally whilst enhancing the student experience.
