Description
The Division of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for a position as Instructional Professor (IP) in the Master of Arts Program in Social Sciences (MAPSS, mapss.uchicago.edu), with a disciplinary specialization in History.
This is a full-time, career-track teaching position; applicants must be able to accept appointment beginning with the 2020-21 academic year. The initial two-year appointment is renewable with opportunity for promotion.
The IP will annually teach four courses in MAPSS, including at least one section of the MAPSS core course “Perspectives in Social Science Analysis,” at least one graduate seminar on historical methods and at least one elective with broad appeal intended to introduce students to foundational questions in their area of history.
In addition, the IP will mentor a group of 18-20 MA students over the MA year and serve as second reader on their MA theses; advise a limited number of MA theses as the primary supervisor; lead an MA Proposal Workshop; hire and manage teaching assistants; contribute to program admissions, staff hiring, and student recruitment; help train doctoral student preceptors; and contribute to the intellectual life and administrative needs of the program.
Applicants must have a PhD in History in hand prior to the start date. Teaching experience is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience advising students with broad academic of interests, guiding students on their individual research and writing, a record of interdisciplinary scholarship, and experience working on scholarly and/or administrative projects as a member of a team.
The position includes support for professional development. The IP will join a dynamic community of social science researchers.
