Cardiff Metropolitan University is one of the UK’s most progressive new Universities, with around 10,000 students based at its two campuses in Cardiff.  It consistently ranks in the top ten per cent of UK higher education institutions for graduate start-ups per student, and this spirit of innovation and enterprise lies at the heart of the University.   Programmes and research are undertaken across five key Schools:  Art and Design; Education and Social Policy; Sport and Health Sciences; Management; and Technologies.   The University is part way through an ambitious strategic plan to 2023 that will see it concentrating on enhanced student outcomes with growth in international activities, disciplinary breadth and overall scale.   The University prides itself on the role that translational research plays in enhancing the student experience.

The post holder will provide academic and clinical teaching in speech, language and communication disorders and therefore contribute to the provision of a range of modules within the BSc (Hons) programme in Speech & Language Therapy and to the development of the research profile of the Centre.  A significant proportion of this teaching will be through the medium of Welsh.  The post holder will also be expected to provide clinical expertise relating to working with various speech, language and communication disorders in Welsh.  The post holder will be registered with HCPC and have been working as a speech and language therapist for at least 5 years.  They will have experience of supervising students on placement.

This post is being created in-line with an intention to develop and extend the existing Welsh-medium provision available within the BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy programme.  This will include the provision of new modules, previously not offered in Welsh, which will mean more opportunities for students to be taught and assessed in Welsh.  This will also include increased in-house and practice-based clinical education that will allow students to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the needs of Welsh-speaking patients/service users and their families.

The post-holder will be a part of a wider community of academic staff at Cardiff Metropolitan University and throughout Wales who are working towards the realisation of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s goal to embed the Welsh language as an intrinsic part of the pattern of lifelong learning for the people of Wales.  He/She will play a key role in the implementation of the Coleg Cymraeg’s Health Professions Subject Plan where there is a focus on the development of graduates who have the skills and capabilities required to meet the needs of the patients and service-users, including being able to communicate and interact with them in their chosen language.
