We at the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) are seeking a Senior Research Fellow/Manager to join our Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies Program to lead a dedicated team in delivering commissioned research to inform policy and practice.

About us

We are the Australian Government’s key independent research body and advisor in the area of family wellbeing, based in the Melbourne CBD.We produce research about ‘what works for families’ and make it accessible to decision makers, practitioners and the general public.

Our team

The Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies (LLS) Program is home to three national longitudinal studies:Growing Up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC), Ten to Men: The Australian Longitudinal Study on Male Health (TTM), and Building a New Life in Australia: The Australian Longitudinal Study on Humanitarian Refugees (BNLA). These are long-running, internationally renowned studies that follow the lives of thousands of people. Over the past 15 years, our studies have informed national policy and public discourse in areas such as mental and physical health, social disadvantage and housing and employment.

About the role:

This position is for an enthusiastic self-driven senior researcher with experience and expertise in management and leadership. The key responsibilities will include, and not be limited to:

  • Development of policy relevant research proposals using LSAC, TTM and BNLA data (statistical reports, research reports,briefs, factsheets,peer-reviewed publications, etc.).
  • Management of a team of multi-disciplinary researchers by setting workplans and budgets and monitoring workflow and practices to ensure timely and successful completion of work.
  • Publication and dissemination of commissioned research to diverse audiences.
  • Representation of AIFS research in the media and in meetings, conferences and seminars.
  • Engagement with key stakeholders including government agencies and universities.

To be successful:

  • You have a minimum of 7–8 years’ research experience using longitudinal data.
  • You demonstrate leadership and have previously led and mentored a team of multi-disciplinary researchers.
  • You have significant expertise and experience in leading statistical analysis and reporting.
  • You have exceptional communication skills and strive to support your team to learn and develop every day.
  • You have a genuine interest in engaging in policy-relevant research and in disseminating this research to a broad range of audiences.
  • You have in-depth understanding of policy issues related to health, wellbeing and life course transitions for Australians, families and communities.

Terms

We will offer the Senior Research Fellow/Manager, Research and Analysis position on a non-ongoing basis for up to 18 months (with the possibility of extension to a maximum term of three years) on a full-time or part-time basis (0.8 FTE minimum). The position is at EL2 with a salary range of $116,211 to $136,239 per annum (full-time equivalent) plus superannuation.
