The Opportunity

The College of Education seeks an incumbent for the position of ECLC Teacher, who is under the supervision of the ECLC Head Teacher and responsible for daily planning and for directly participating with children assigned to her classroom. The ECLC Teacher, coordinates the services of all caregivers in the classroom—staff, ZU student teachers, and volunteers. The English-speaking ECLC Teacher plans for the English and Arabic activities of the classroom to assure that students have experiences in both languages daily.  

The Responsibilities

Curriculum and Classroom Management

  • Facilitates the classroom in accordance with center policies to ensure that children placed in the classroom receive high-quality and appropriate developmental care in a safe environment.
  • Plans, supervises and executes a developmentally appropriate program to provide for the educational, social, physical and health needs of the children based on the Creative Curriculum® and in accordance with best practices in early childhood care and education.
  • Plans and implements an age appropriate, reassuring daily routine that provides for children’s basic needs (toileting, eating, resting/sleeping), alternates active and quiet periods, and is relaxed enough that caregivers can take advantage of “teachable moments.”
  • Maintains a safe, attractive, and organized classroom environment with a range of age appropriate toys and materials arranged in accordance with the ECLC curriculum.
  • Follows proper safety guidelines of the Early Childhood Learning Center to ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times.
  • Coordinates with other classroom co-teachers to ensure safety and implementation of the program.
  • Ensures all classroom caregivers utilize positive guidance techniques when communicating with the children.
  • Leads group circle time as well as small group activities, projects, games, etc.
  • Encourages children’s age appropriate independence and cooperation.
  • Encourages interaction and participation among the children.
  • Promotes individual children’s learning experiences in English/Arabic and plays with the children at their eye level throughout the day.
  • Assures that breakfast, lunch, and snacks are prepared and served according to regulations and use mealtimes to foster communication among the children, reinforce manners, and communicate with the children about nutrition and healthy eating habits.
  • Supports and assists ECLC Director in the implementation of research in the classroom and at the ECLC.
  • Supports and assists ECLC Head Teacher in the mentoring and guiding ZU teachers in training at the ECLC.

Communication and Administrative Tasks

  • Completes reports and relevant paperwork, i.e. lesson plans, parent communications, attendance reports, child observations, medication logs, and incident reports, in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully to parents and staff of the Early Childhood Learning Center.
  • Effectively communicates concerns and issues about children to the Head Teacher.
  • Ensures all required documents, i.e., policies, schedules, menus, etc. are properly posted and remain posted.
  • Writes lesson plans on a weekly basis ensuring they include activities to promote literacy, math, social studies, science, large and fine motor development, creative talents, and positive social skills.
  • Checks staff email on a daily basis and responds accordingly.
  • Maintains confidentiality pertaining to information on all children and families.
  • Attends all required meetings and trainings.
  • Participates collaboratively in all College of Education initiatives including: University students’ practicum experiences, research initiatives and community outreach initiatives.
  • Builds positive relationship with parents and community by implementing strategies aimed at communication (such as attending parent/ teacher meetings, ECLC Open Days, providing input into newsletters, participating in extra-curricular activities such as Coffee Talks and so on).

The Requirements

  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree in Education/ Early Childhood Education or related field (or a bachelor’s degree in another field in addition to postgraduate or vocational education specific to early childhood education) with a minimum of 0-1 year of experience as a teacher in an early childhood classroom.
  • Knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, management of children’s behavior, teaching and learning.
  • Ability and commitment to work beyond traditional working hours and schedule.
  • Ability to utilize effective and clear communication with colleagues and children.
  • Strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in both Arabic and English language preferred.
