The Department of German in the School of Modern Languages at the University of Bristol seeks to appoint to a fixed-term Lectureship (Grade J, Profile B, Pathway 3, 0.8 FTE) from 1 September 2020 for two years. This is to cover for a colleague’s temporary secondment within the University.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute fully to the teaching programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) of the Department of German and the School of Modern Languages, and to assume responsibility for an appropriate share of the administration of teaching. Bristol’s School of Modern Languages offers a significant proportion of its teaching cross-departmentally, to which the appointee will be expected to contribute.

We encourage applications from those with expertise in 20th- and 21st-century German Studies, including film, cultural studies, visual culture, politics and contemporary history, and/or comparative literary studies (with German). Applicants with a predominantly literary background should demonstrate an aptitude for teaching modern German literature within its historical, political, and/or broader cultural backgrounds. Additional expertise in other languages, literatures, and cultures, such that the applicant can contribute fully to the School’s inter-departmental or comparative courses, would be especially welcome. We are open to a wide range of specialisms, and candidates are encouraged to discuss their suitability with one of the contacts below before submitting their application.

This appointment has no formal research component. Nonetheless, all teaching in the School of Modern Languages is informed by research. The successful applicant will therefore have a well-developed research profile, at or beyond doctoral level, in a relevant field of German Studies, Cultural Studies, or Comparative Literary Studies (including German), that will feed into teaching for the Department and School. S/He will have native or near-native command of German and the ability to teach the German language at all levels.  To reflect the 0.8 FTE contract during term time one weekday will be completely free of timetabled teaching.

Please ensure you submit a CV and covering letter via the system.

The appointment start date is 1st September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
