Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine invites applications for:

Research Fellow in Bioinformatics

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in Bioinformatics to join Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (Professor John C Chambers) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Professor Chambers has established and led large-scale prospective population studies in Europe, South Asia and Singapore, with these unique population cohorts leading to the discovery of novel genetic and epigenetic pathways associated with coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes, obesity, and related metabolic disturbances, implicating new molecular pathways underlying these diseases. The group is currently focused on identification of mechanisms that underlie the high rate of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in Asian populations, as well as translational research to improve prevention and control of these major diseases.

The potential candidate will play a key role in determining if molecular information can be used to inform stratified approaches for health promotion and therapeutic intervention to prevent type 2 diabetes (T2D). Specifically, the candidate will be involved in replicating and extending the association of DNA methylation and serum metabolites with incident T2D amongst Asians and developing, calibrating and validating the molecular risk scores for prediction of T2D and other diseases which are of importance to the Asian population.

The potential candidate will be responsible for performing quality control and analysis of complex molecular data including whole genome sequence data, bisulfite sequencing data, metabolomics and transcriptomic profiling (including RNA-seq) for research participants, and advancing bioinformatic and statistical analyses, including cross-omic studies to investigate the processes and pathways underlying diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Asian populations. He/she will be involved in development and evaluation of biomarkers and risk functions for predictions of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other major diseases. The candidate will also be expected to employ appropriate statistical techniques, as well as developing and implementing approaches for quantifying and correcting for biases in laboratory measurements and imputation of missing data. He/she will need to build databases containing the genomic datasets, write scripts to analyse the information in the dataset and queries to retrieve the information. In addition, the candidate will also be expected to demonstrate the ability to present results within the research group in a coherent fasion, using appropriate presentations formats, and contribute strongly to reporting study results, including writing up for publication in peer-reviewed journals and supporting grant applications.

Candidates should have at least a PhD in Bioinformatics. Experience with working on big genomic datasets, a good understanding of genomic approaches including genetic association, metabolomic and transcriptomic profiling is essential.

This opening will be based at LKCMedicine Novena Campus, Singapore. Salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications. Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) established in September 2010 is a partnership between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Consistently rated amongst the world's best universities, Imperial College London is a science-based institution with a reputation for excellence in teaching and research while NTU is the only Singapore university listed in the Top 10 of the Times Higher’s 200 Under 50 Rankings and is ranked the world’s No. 1 young university by QS in the last three consecutive years.

The post is available for 1 year in the first instance.

For informal inquiries and application, please contact Dr Ee-Ling Ng, (ngeeling@ntu.edu.sg).

Applications will be received until a suitable candidate is shortlisted.
