Assistant/Associate Professor in Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Mechanics

The Center for Design, Manufacturing and Materials (CDMM) of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) invites applications for two faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the areas of: (1) Composites and Advanced Materials, (2) Additive Manufacturing, (3) Industrial Robotics, and (4) Applied Mechanics with a tentative starting date of January 2021.

Composites and Advanced Materials:

CDMM seeks for exceptional candidates with expertise in multifunctional polymer composites and advanced materials manufacturing technologies and with an emphasis on polymer chemistry and physics. The successful candidate will have a broad multidisciplinary background and proficiency in fundamental and applied research and is expected to lead an active team of researchers and graduate students in the Laboratory for Composite Materials and Structures. The Laboratory is equipped with the state-of-the art pultrusion, vacuum-assisted infusion, pressing and filament-winding systems as well as advanced mechanical testing equipment. Research scientists, postdocs, and graduate students are actively involved in research on modern manufacturing technologies, including the development of new materials and structural concepts based on numerical simulations and optimization, and characterization and certification of composite materials. The areas of interest for the position include: chemistry of polymers and composite materials; shape memory polymers for composites; concepts of novel design and advanced manufacturing technologies; smart materials and structures; multifunctional composites.

Additive Manufacturing:

CDMM seeks for exceptional candidates with emphasis across all areas of additive manufacturing and materials processing technologies. They are expected to lead an active team of researchers and graduate students in the Laboratory for Additive Manufacturing. The Laboratory is equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment for: 3D printing of plastics, metals, and ceramics; additive technologies of powder-bed fusion, stereolithography, binder jetting, and direct energy deposition; modern post-processing and characterization equipment. Outstanding candidates with expertise in these and other related areas will be considered.

Industrial Robotics:

CDMM is looking for highly motivated candidates with research and development skills and  the ability to lead an active team of researchers and graduate students to contribute to the research fields of the Laboratory for Industrial Robotics. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise that integrates strongly with the interdisciplinary team of CDMM faculty. The Laboratory is equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment from all major robot-producers: Kuka, Fanuc, and ABB. The areas of interest for the position include: design and control of robots in manufacturing processes; soft robots; medical and biocompatible robots; origami-based engineering; robots for space exploration; advanced systems for robotic fabrication; robotic sensing systems; micro-robots and service robots.

Applied Mechanics:

CDMM seeks for exceptional candidates with skills to lead an active team of researchers and graduate students to contribute to the research fields of focus of the Laboratory for Micro-Nano-Mechanics. The areas of interest for the position include: theoretical, experimental and applied research in the areas of mechanics of micro- and nano-manufacturing that are related to process innovation with feature sizes less than one hundred micrometers, including droplets, bubbles, aerosols, films, molecular monolayers, etc.; solid, fluid, and multiphase mechanics with applications to materials and manufacturing; digital design, experimental development, and full-scale testing of micro-nano-structured materials and systems (“smart” materials, optomechanical sensors); quantum and classical DFT applications, molecular dynamics of polymers, chemistry of sizing and functionalization.

All the positions above require that the candidates hold a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Mechanics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or related areas by the start of the appointment. For the Associate Professor position, candidates are expected to have at least 6 years of academic or industrial experience after obtaining their Ph.D. degree.

The successful candidates must provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output and/or evidence of successful industrial projects. The candidates will be committed to research activities at the CDMM, to strengthening the educational program of CDMM in Digital Engineering and Applied Mechanics, providing leadership to the team, recruiting and mentoring outstanding new researchers, and promoting partnerships with industry. Faculty duties include teaching at a graduate level, advising students, and conducting fundamental and applied research.
