The School of Languages and Cultures is one of the largest Schools of language instruction in Australia with over 52 academic staff.

The School teaches Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Korean, Japanese, Russian and Spanish, as well as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, to students in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies, and the university-wide concurrent Diploma in Languages, the Diploma of Arts, and dual degree programs.

At postgraduate level the School offers a Master of Arts in in Applied Linguistics and two NAATI-accredited Masters programs in Translation and Interpreting (one in Japanese and one in Chinese). Staff research and supervise PhD students in linguistics, second language studies, translation and interpreting, studies in culture, and related fields.

About This Opportunity

The School of Languages and Cultures seeks a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to engage in undergraduate teaching in the Western Civilisation major, focusing on European Enlightenment texts.

The Western Civilisation major is an interdisciplinary sequence of courses developed by academic staff at The University of Queensland. Taught in small seminars of approximately 10 students, these courses follow a ‘great books’ format and are designed to encourage close reading and critical reflection. As part of the Western Civilisation faculty, you will join an enthusiastic, collaborative teaching team that prioritises student experience and intellectual rigour. Teaching in this major will bring you into contact with some of the brightest and most engaged students that The University of Queensland has to offer.

Proposed courses consider the influence of Enlightenment ideas in literature, philosophy, art, politics and the societies they helped create. They also considers objections that have been raised against some of these ideas and what we think of these objections today.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Teaching into the Western Civilisation major
• Assisting in the teaching of the core units of the Advanced Humanities degree.
• Advising Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students as required.
• Maintaining a program of research, including scholarly publication.
• Working with colleagues and postgraduates in the development of joint research projects across the School, Faculty, and University where relevant.
• Fostering the School’s relations with schools, professional bodies and the wider community.

Our Ideal Candidate

We welcome applications from individuals who demonstrate expert knowledge in an area of the European Enlightenment. The position is open to candidates from any relevant disciplinary background, including philosophy, literary studies, history, and European studies.

Successful Level B candidates will demonstrate:

• Completion of a PhD in an area relevant to the teaching of the European Enlightenment.
• Evidence of undergraduate teaching experience in the required areas of expertise.
• Expertise in one or more European languages
• Academic supervisory skills at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• An ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote academic discipline at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

In addition to the essentials for Level B above, Level C candidates must have the following:

• A developing international profile for research, evidenced by an outstanding record of publication.
• Experience in academic administration at a disciplinary level.
• A track record in the production of course materials for courses at a range of undergraduate levels.
• An emerging track record of applications for external research funds, especially grants and fellowships, and other research project funding.

The position reports directly to the Director of the Program in Western Civilisation and has a functional reporting line to the Head, School of Languages and Cultures.

This is a full-time, fixed term position for five years at Academic Level B/C. The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD$97,590 - $137,846, plus super of up to 17%.
