Adjunct Professor/Adjunct Associate Professor in Deep Sea Mining

About the position

We have a vacancy for an Adjunct Professor/Adjunct Associate Professor at Department of Geoscience and petroleum. The Adjunct Professor/Adjunct Associate Professor position has a full-time equivalence of 20% and has a fixed term of up to 5 years with the possibility of employment for further periods.

The position reports to the Head of the department.

The Department consists of the six research groups Engineering Geology, Geology, Geophysics, Mineral production and HSE, Reservoir engineering and petrophysics and Well construction and production systems. The present position is within Deep Sea Mining in the research group Mineral production and HSE.

Duties of the positions

  • the adjunct professorship will be involved in multidisciplinary research activities at NTNU related to the potential future exploitation of marine minerals
  • the successful candidate is expected to contribute in the development of and teaching in courses related to the exploitation of marine minerals, with a special focus on mining systems and technologies. Hereunder, autonomous operations and data collection by and communication between the different components of the mining system.
  • responsibilities will also include supervision of master- and PhD-students
  • it is also expected that the position contributes both in generating new projects and follow-up on ongoing projects at NTNU within the fields of deep-sea mining and marine operations. Both international and national funding schemes should be sought utilized. This includes EU / H2020, development of centers of excellence and other RCN-funding schemes
  • the adjunct professorship must agree to participate in some administrative work

Required selection criteria

Adjunct Professor:

The position of Professor within deep sea mining requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-2.  

  • your academic work must be essentially within deep sea mining systems and technologies
  • documented ability to work in team, manage both industrial and commercial developments, industrial experience and a global and established industrial network is considered a necessity
  • the successful applicant for an adjunct professorship must be able to document his/her qualifications in important fields within the discipline
  • weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document 

  • development in teaching and counselling of students over time 
  • extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level 
  • participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment

Adjunct Associate Professor:

The position of Assistant Professor within (subject area) requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.  

  • your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within deep sea mining systems and technologies    
  • documented ability to work in team, manage both industrial and commercial developments, industrial experience and a global and established industrial network is considered a necessity

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document 

  • development in teaching and counselling of students over time 
  • extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level 
  • participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment 

For both positions:

You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Master and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years. 

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

Salary and conditions

In a position as Adjunct Professor (code 1013) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 130 000 to NOK 210 000 per year, corresponding with a 20% position, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

In a position as Adjunct Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 120 000 to NOK 180 000 per year, corresponding with a 20% position, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
