About the position

At the Department of Sociology and Political Science there is a temporary position as Postdoctoral Fellow for a period of 2 years attached to the ‘Anatomy of resistance campaigns’ project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The position may include up to one more year of work for the department. The position as a Postdoctoral Fellow has the primary goal of qualifying for work in academic senior positions.

You will report to the Head of the Department.

Duties of the position

The postdoctoral fellow position is attached to the ‘Anatomy of resistance campaigns’ project led by Associate Professor Charles Butcher (NTNU) and Dr. Jessica Braithwaite (University of Arizona). The ARC project aims to understand how organizational networks in resistance movements (violent and nonviolent) influence the prospects of sustainable democratization.

In addition to her/his other research activities (50%), the postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute to the core activities of the ARC project (50%), specifically:

1. by leading research assistants engaged in data collection,
2. data analysis related to two publications addressing coalition formation in resistance movements and/or the impact of variations in organizational networks on post-conflict institutions and
3. undertaking some data collection where necessary. The contribution of the postdoctoral researcher can be either in the area of network analysis or quantitative data collection and analysis.

While all applications will be considered, candidates with a background in quantitative methods, network analysis and/or the study of civil resistance campaigns and nonviolent conflict will be looked upon favorably.

Postdoctoral fellow:

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in political science, international relations, sociology, peace and conflict studies, or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
• A strong background in quantitative research methods.
• The applicants will be assessed in accordance with:
  1. the quality and potential of the candidate’s scientific record 
  2. the potential contribution to the ARC project
  3. the quality and potential of the research plan

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Salary and conditions

The employment period is 2 years, with a possibility for extension, 1 year duty work for the Department of Social and Political Science.

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 542 400 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

The position is subject to external funding.
