HIGHER EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (HEDC)

Who We Are

The University of Otago is New Zealand's first and oldest University. It has a strong teaching and research tradition and well-established national and international linkages. It is also one of New Zealand's largest universities, with over 20,000 students, assets in excess of $1.6 billion and 4,000 full-time equivalent staff based in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Invercargill.

The Higher Education Development Centre (HEDC) is an academic department that provides an academic development and service to the University by contributing to the development of University policy on teaching, learning and research, as well as offering academic support and advice to staff and students. HEDC works in partnership with staff and students to advance, preserve and promote the ideals, knowledge and values of higher education.

The Role

We are looking for a Teaching Fellow to provide support in teaching across four of our programmes, under the supervision of the academic colleagues responsible for programme design and delivery. These programmes are academic development, Peer Learning, Undergraduate Student Learning, Tutor Training and, for candidates with a PhD, Postgraduate Student Learning.

In this role, you will be required to:

  • Be actively involved in the preparation of teaching materials.
  • Deliver tutorials and workshops.
  • Undertake assessment and administration duties for the four programmes.

This is a rare opportunity to combine a successful academic career with the work-life balance people enjoy at Otago. We foster a collaborative and collegial approach to teaching and research.

Your Skills and Experience

You will have an expert understanding of teaching and student learning at the tertiary level as well as:

  • Bachelor's degree (a PhD would be an advantage).
  • Proven ability to work with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds, from all departments and divisions, and at all levels of the institution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Further Details

This is a fixed-term, part-time position (0.8 FTE) available immediately until 30 June 2020.

Applications quoting reference number 2000463 will close on Sunday, 8 March 2020.
