Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Director of Development Services, the Associate Director of Research and Prospect Management will design, implement and oversee the research and prospect management efforts for the Law Development and Alumni Relations office, serving as the principal authority on prospect management, development research, philanthropic trends, and patterns of wealth and industry.

Job Description

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Design and implement short and long-term strategic plans or prospect development and research that align with fundraising priorities;
  • Conduct training sessions on prospect research and tracking as requested for LDAR staff as well as train, supervise and evaluate staff and student assistants;
  • Supervise the Campaign Research Coordinator position, and as applicable, student assistants, ensuring the delegation of appropriate work, consistent workflow, and strong, efficient and accurate service;
  • Prepare for, and staff events, hosted by the Law Development & Alumni Relations Department, such as Alumni Weekend, Benefactors’ Dinner, Overseers Meetings, various lectures, and other events.

RESEARCH

  • Develop and implement strategies for all research in support of the Law School’s development needs, including but not limited to advanced research projects relating to prospects located outside of the US, non-alumni prospects interested in supporting the Law School’s various research centers and institutes, and corporate and foundation prospects;
  • Design and produce a range of research information products that meet the needs of the Dean, Vice Dean and Development staff, including research profiles, leadership reports, biographical summaries, financial analyses, family trees, industry summaries, and prospect identification strategies; and
  • Use departmental, University and external resources including Daily Gift Reports, major periodicals, web sites, and alternate news sources to identify and qualify potential Law prospects at the $100K+ level.

PROSPECT MANAGEMENT

  • In consultation with the Executive Director of Development and the Director of Development Services, manage the assignment of newly identified prospects to a team of five major gift officers and two annual giving team members, ensuring major gift activity is coordinated;
  • Manage and maintain prospect portfolios of all Law frontline fundraisers;
  • Work closely with the Director of Development Services and major gift officers to ensure that prospects are being shepherded through the philanthropic cycle (identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship);
  • Provide consultation to development officers to assemble a comprehensive prospect portfolio for approved campaigns and initiatives and ensure an adequate number of capable, likely prospects to support fundraising priorities;
  • Use departmental, University, Internet-based and other external sources to proactively identify and develop profiles;
  • Manage prospect qualification, assignment, report generation and prospect tracking; and
  • Manage bi-weekly prospect meetings and strategy sessions including agenda setting, pipeline review, and next step management.

DATA AND REPORTS

  • Maintain the integrity of Law data in the Atlas database and internal master prospects list;
  • Develop end-user documentation including briefings, and tracking reports;
  • Manage campaign pipeline and data (including the campaign pyramid);
  • Provide analytical support for fundraising initiatives; and
  • Update prospect assignments on Atlas.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three to five years’ experience in prospect research and database management, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Familiarity with careers in the legal, business, and finance fields a plus.
  • Proven track record in proactive research, experience with international research and familiarity with data analysis are essential.
  • Knowledge of prospect research skills required, including familiarity with traditional as well as electronic and internet-based resources.
  • Ability to gather, analyze & report information from diverse sources & work independently
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of office procedures, practices & methods, including word processing (Microsoft Word for Windows), spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel) and database (Microsoft Access) programs required; experience with prospect research resources such as WealthEngine, Lexis/Nexis, ZoomInfo, etc.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and meet tight deadlines essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service to many constituents in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to the Law School ideals of collaboration is required.
