About the Department

Dynamic and vibrant Durham University Business School is one of Durham University’s four Faculties and is comprised of three Departments: Management and Marketing, Accounting, and Economics and Finance. The School aims to be a Top 20 European Business School, known for its global reputation, its impact on practice and its strong focus on ethics, responsibility and sustainability. With highly-ranked Online and Full Time MBA programmes – 9th and 43rd globally accreditations from AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS and professional endorsement by the Chartered institutes of Personnel Development and Marketing and the NHS Leadership Academy, the school’s vision is to lead business thought and practice to improve global wealth and well-being. Durham Global Fellowship  

The Durham Global Fellowship is a fixed term fellowship in a subject area covered by Durham University Business School for periods of one, two, or three terms, in the academic year beginning October 2020. The fellowship is for established researchers (typically full Professors) who will be responsible for providing vision and direction for research collaborators and colleagues whilst leading a programme of research at international level broadening the depth and range of research in the School. In addition, to collaborating with colleagues from our research centres, it is expected that the Fellow will make contribution to the School’s teaching efforts.

You will have a considerable international reputation in an area covered by Durham University Business School research and demonstrate successful leadership of a research group as well as in the teaching and training of students. An excellent track record in peer-reviewed publications is essential 

Background and Scope  

The Global Fellowship in Durham provides an opportunity for established academics to conduct research at the Durham University Business School in any area covered by the faculty. We expect to fund up to three Fellowships, (dependent in quality of proposals) designed to produce work of the highest quality leading to scientific, societal and economic impact. These fellowships will be awarded to outstanding applicants whose research interests align with the research agenda of the Durham University Business School (https://www.dur.ac.uk/business/research/). 

Our research spans disciplines, geographies and industries. We feed fresh thinking and push the boundaries of how businesses work. From social policy and economic growth to international development, our research is renowned and relevant around the world. Within the general subject areas of Accounting and Finance; Economics, Management, and Marketing, we have a number of specialist centres:

  • Ethical Finance, Accountability and Governance

This initiative is part of the School’s ambition to be a Top 20 European Business School by 2027. The Global Fellows will use their time at Durham University Business School to publish outputs (with co-authors in Durham) as part of the School’s community of scholars. Outputs could take a variety of forms, ranging from academic papers to blogs and articles aimed at the general public, to holding small events bringing together social scientists and key stakeholder groups. We welcome proposals based around either adding value to existing research, which could (though not a requirement) include some new research if it was to complement or support existing research.

Contributions to academic and particularly broader user impact are expected throughout the Fellowship. This could involve activities such as organising seminars or briefings to discuss research issues or to disseminate findings at different stages of the research to relevant stakeholders, or developing a discussion network based around the research issue.

Key responsibilities:  

  • Pursue research that is world-leading, and world-changing in terms of originality, significance and rigour, showing leadership in a research field within and/or beyond the academy which is commensurate with the Department’s continuing emphasis on international excellence; 
  • To lead the development of successful research project/fellowship proposals in pursuit of suitable national and international funding opportunities to support research and end-user engagement;
  • Deliver excellent teaching, offering lectures, seminars and tutorials at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels.  Demonstrate leadership and innovation in the design and delivery of high quality learning environments and curricula.
  • Enhance the quality of the research environment in the Department, providing leadership of national and international research groups and networks which is recognised at an international level.  Engage in the mentoring of early career researchers; 
  • To attract and provide excellent supervision to research students, and contribute significantly to the development of PhD programmes.  Enhance the Department’s commitment to its vibrant and international postgraduate culture. 
  • Contribute significantly to the administrative functioning and collegial environment of the Department and wider University, demonstrating sustained excellence in leadership activities which support the functioning of the Department and wider University.
  • To fully engage in, champion and enhance the values of the Department;
  • Carry out such other duties as specified by the Head of Department.

Assessment criteria  

Research excellence is the primary criterion for selection and is essential. The Fellowship Panel, chaired by the Associate Dean for Internationalisation, Executive Deputy Dean for Research, (Faculty’s Research Committee) and Heads of Department will be asked to comment on the following criteria in assessing proposals:

Relevance of fellowship to one of the research centre:

The proposal is expected to clearly contribute to one of the School’s research centres. It is expected that the Research Directors of the Centres will support the Fellowship application. Proposals, which do not meet this criterion, will not be accepted.

Academic standing:  

  • Acknowledged record of highly regarded outputs of international standing
  • Evidence of outstanding contributions to an area covered by Durham University Business School and leadership in the field
  • Outputs, dissemination, engagement and impact strategy
  • Demonstrate proposed engagement with Research Centre Director and the Associate Dean for Internationalisation

Agenda:

  • Creativity, innovation planned research questions
  • Chosen methodologies
  • Potential contribution towards advancing the research field (eg in terms of conceptual understanding, theoretical or methodological development, application of research-based knowledge to policy or practice and/or development of inter-disciplinary approaches etc).

Only those proposals, which demonstrate they meet the selection criteria, are likely to be successful.

Case for support- maximum of four sides of A4 (minimum font size 11 with 2cm margins)

All applications must include a Case for Support in PDF format. The case for support is the body of your research plan and proposal. It must not exceed 4 pages and should cover the key points listed in the assessment criteria. Any materials that extend beyond these limits will be removed from the application.

Cost and duration of Fellowships  

Fellowships will last for a maximum of three terms (https://www.dur.ac.uk/dates/). This is a fixed term appointment. Applicants can put in any start date, as long as it is in line with the terms dates at Durham University (https://www.dur.ac.uk/dates/).

Grade 10 Competitive salary based on our professorial Pay Scales.

Research ethics

Applicants must ensure the proposed research will be carried out to a high ethical standard and must clearly state how any potential ethical and health and safety issues have been considered and will be addressed ensuring that all necessary ethical approval is in place before the project commences and all risks are minimised.

Person specification and eligibility

Applicants to the Fellowship are expected to be individuals of high international standing in their field. They will have an outstanding track record and significant experience in designing and managing research of the highest quality, and disseminating the results of such research within academia and to government, policymakers, civil society, business and the general public.

Applicants must demonstrate their ability to produce outstanding contributions to an area covered by Durham University Business School and lead innovative and exciting research agendas. The applicant's international standing will be an important criterion.

This call is open to high-quality candidates from anywhere in the world provided their proposal meets the requirements of the call. However, all potential applicants must provide us with a letter of support from their host University - if they are successful.

Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in the field of Management, Economics or Accounting, with the ability to teach our students to an exceptional standard and to fully engage in the services, citizenship and values of the University.

Research  

Candidates will demonstrate world-leading and world-changing research, and leadership in a research field within and / or beyond their institution(s), with research outputs consistently recognised as internationally excellent. 

The essential research criteria for this post are:

  • A good first degree and a PhD in Management, Economics or Accounting or a related subject
  • Evidence of research outputs which are consistently recognised as internationally excellent with some output being evaluated as world class.  
  • Evidence of a personal research plan which supports and enhances the research centre’s research strategy.
  • Leadership of national / international research groups and networks, with an internationally recognised contribution to the development of research fields, as well as leadership of research groups and / or mentoring of early career researchers.
  • A significant contribution to the development of PhD programmes and / or groups, including successful recruitment and excellent supervision of PhD students.  
  • Leadership of research that has demonstrable impact beyond the Candidate’s institution(s). 
  • Evidence of leadership of successful research projects and / or fellowship proposals

Teaching  

Candidates will be able to evidence excellence in the development and delivery of teaching.  They will demonstrate leadership, distinction and innovation in the design and delivery of high quality learning environments and curricula that enables student to achieve their potential.

The essential teaching criteria for this role are :

  • Evidence of excellence in the development and delivery of high-quality and distinctive teaching, at least at a nationally competitive level.   
  • Candidates may choose to provide MEQ scores and / or peer reviews of teaching.
  • Leadership in the development of innovative teaching and the design of learning environments / curricula that provide high quality teaching and student experience at an internationally competitive level including lectures, small group learning and/or using technology or other techniques to enhance learning and/or assessment. 
  • Demonstrating leadership in the design and delivery of internationally-excellent teaching programmes and the creation of learning environments that enable students to achieve their potential. 

Services, Citizenship and Values  

Candidates will demonstrate sustained excellence of leadership in the provision of the administrative and collegial requirements of their Department, Faculty, institution or discipline as well as demonstrating their commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
