Research Fellow in low temperature terahertz frequency measurements of condensed matter systems

Employer
UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS
Location
Leeds, United Kingdom
Salary
£33,797 to £40,322 p.a.
Closing date
18 Mar 2020

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in experimental low-temperature physics and optical measurement techniques? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities?

We are seeking a Research Fellow to join a large, collaborative, £6M EPSRC-funded project. You will focus on precision measurements of condensed matter systems using coherent terahertz (THz) frequency radiation. The successful candidate will develop the first THz waveguide integrated dilution refrigerator, enabling THz radiation from quantum cascade lasers to be directed into the sample space of the refrigerator for millikelvin optical measurements. It will be crucial to minimise thermal losses, while maximising THz power delivery. You will then use this system to perform low-temperature opto-electronic measurements at THz frequencies on a range of condensed matter systems, including 2D electron systems, lithographically-defined quantum wires and dots, and other materials of contemporary relevance.

You will join a world-leading terahertz research group at the University of Leeds, with state-of-the-art growth, device fabrication, and terahertz experimental facilities, and collaborate with other members of the consortium including those in the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge.

You will have a background in low-temperature experimental physics, and an excellent knowledge of optical and/or electronic measurement techniques. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, a proactive approach to problem solving, and be comfortable interacting day-to-day with academics of all career stages across several institutions.

As part of the same project we are also recruiting for a Research Fellow in injection-locked terahertz quantum cascade lasers.  For more information click here.
