Senior Research Associate/ Research Fellow in Primary Care Mental Health

Job number   ACAD104444
Division/School
 Bristol Medical School
Contract type   Open Ended
Working pattern    Full time
Salary      £38,017 to £42,792 per annum / £44,045 to £49,553 per annum
Closing date for applications     11-Mar-2020

We want to appoint a quantitative researcher (for example Psychologist / Epidemiologist) who wishes to develop a career in primary care mental health. This post provides an exciting opportunity for the successful applicant to pursue funding (e.g. NIHR RfPB, NIHR postdoctoral fellowship) for trials aimed at treating mental health problems and cognitive impairment in older adults in primary care settings.

You will have an interest and expertise in applied quantitative research methods. You may have a background in epidemiology, medical statistics, psychology, or another relevant quantitative science. You will be able to demonstrate outstanding academic ability, coupled with the potential for future research leadership, commensurate with your career stage. You will either have completed, or have submitted, your PhD; will have a clear vision of the research you would like to pursue; and be able to convince the panel that you are going to develop practical research questions in relation to primary care mental health.

A key priority for this post will be to build on the successful partnership between the University of Bristol and the Research and Evidence team (R&E team) at NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (BNSSG CCG), and, for you to begin to develop an NIHR funded research programme that is hosted by the CCG.

You will join the Centre for Academic Mental Health (CAMH) (http://www.bris.ac.uk/psychiatry/). The Centre brings together researchers working on mental health within Population Health Sciences (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/psychiatry/research/). We have an internationally recognised research programme funded by the MRC, NIHR, Wellcome Trust and other medical research charities. We are multidisciplinary and the researchers in the Centre include psychiatrists, epidemiologists, GPs, public health physicians, statisticians, psychologists and social scientists. We are part of the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre, which has a mental health workstream, and therefore aim to conduct innovative translational medical science research. Although the focus of this post is research, you will also make a limited contribution to the School’s teaching programme.

Appointment will be made at either Senior Research Associate (grade J) level or Research Fellow (grade K) level depending on skills and experience.  Funding is available for 24 months and has been secured from BNSSG CCG Research and Evidence team. A key priority for this post is to gain further research funding in partnership with local CCGs.

After the period of funding, it is anticipated that you will be in an excellent position to gain a postdoctoral research fellowship from NIHR or another funder (as we have an outstanding track record in supporting individuals to gain these awards), or to have attracted funding for their post through externally funded grant(s).
