Job Summary
Caltech’s Strategy Implementation Event Productions Office is responsible for the scheduling, maintenance, management, and operations of three high-profile Institute facilities - Beckman Auditorium, Ramo Auditorium, and Beckman Mall, and for managing the marketing, production and customer service for the approximately 150 events held in these facilities annually. Campus Event Productions also manages the Caltech Ticket Office, which not only sells event tickets, but also serves as a de-facto visitors’ center for the Institute. These activities frequently serve as a first point of engagement for the community and directly contribute to the perception of the Institute as a whole by the public. Campus Event Productions staff must ensure excellence in the planning and production of the events, as well as in customer service provided in the Ticket Office.
Reporting to the Operations Manager, Campus Event Productions, the Stage Electrician supports programs in a variety of performing arts and campus events held in the Caltech auditoriums. The Stage Electrician will primarily perform lighting design and light board operation for scheduled events, but will also be expected to participate in a variety of tasks involved in stage production, service and support.
This is full-time regular position. The work schedule is assigned based on the event schedule. Some evening and weekend work required and some overtime is to be expected.
Job Duties
- Produce lighting designs for all scheduled events in Caltech auditoriums. Work in collaboration with production staff to execute light hang, focus, strike, and restoration of all production lighting. Prepare and maintain documentation such as plots/cue sheets/patch lists/reports, etc. for all productions
- Analyze lighting designs and plots submitted in artist technical riders and adapt requirements to the specifics of Caltech auditoriums. Work in collaboration with artist staff to facilitate successful implementation of event lighting design
- Operate light boards for all scheduled events in Caltech auditoriums
- Perform the physical duties necessary for the set-up and strike of all scheduled events
- Operate audio/visual equipment including projectors, computers, video playback and recording equipment, etc. Assist with maintenance and operation of auditorium systems and equipment including lighting, rigging, staging, etc.
- Install and test new auditorium equipment and electronic systems
- Install, update, and maintain hardware, software and operating systems for theatrical control equipment. Troubleshoot software and hardware problems and recommend corrective action
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electronic equipment malfunctions. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on lighting equipment. Maintain accurate inventory records
- Other duties as assigned
- Perform work in accordance with Institute and regulatory agencies (e.g. OSHA) safety standards and practices
Basic Qualifications
- High School education or equivalent plus 5-7 years of relevant experience
- Ability to apply advanced skills in performing arts services, auditorium event support and services. Evaluate and apply standard techniques, tools, materials, procedures and/or equipment to accomplish tasks
- Ability to creatively adapt lighting plots to accommodate the requirements of productions
- Expertise and experience in adequately troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, modifications, upgrades, repairs, etc.
- Ability to use hand tools and electronic instruments
- Proficiency in the operation of theatrical lighting instruments, dimmers, and control surfaces
- Effective problem solving and organizational skills
- Must possess excellent organizational communication (verbal & written), and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of various computer software programs including AutoCAD, Vector Works, and Microsoft Office suite
- Knowledge and experience with programming ETC lighting consoles
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license throughout the course of employment. A pre-employment background investigation is required
- Physical strength to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis, including moving stage sets and props, audio equipment and lighting equipment. Agility to bend in all directions, climb stairs and ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather. Must pass a post-offer physical exam
Preferred Qualifications
- An advanced degree in theatrical lighting design is preferred
