The CSA & G serves to link theory and practice in working with a diverse range of UP students through extra-curricula work. The work of the CSA&G provides students with the life-skills that are  needed for addressing the difficult social, political and economic  challenges that could  be  faced in society and the workplace. The work of the CSA&G is increasingly underpinned by research and publishing and the Director has to have a clear vision about research that is both theoretical and applied. Ongoing community engagement is key to the success of the CSA&G in order to stay abreast of current trends and debates 

The Director needs to be passionate about working with students on issues of sexualities, AIDS and Gender through a rigorous academic engagement that crosses the traditional academic boundaries of the various degree structures. This way of working with students as educators, trainers and counsellors is unique. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will have academic, managerial and administrative responsibilities and will work closely with the Deanery in Humanities. The Director will also work with a range of stakeholders within the University (beyond Humanities) and with non-university partners and practitioners. 

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Providing vision and leadership in respect of the CSA & G at the University of Pretoria;
  • Collaborating actively within the faculty and across the University, as well as working within a national, regional and international context;
  • Providing leadership in respect of the research related to the CSA & G; and
  • Fundraising for the work of the CSA&G.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A PhD with a specialised interest in the intersections of Sexualities, AIDS and Gender. HIV and AIDS work remains a key component of the CSA & G;
  • Experience in GBV;
  • A successful track record at this level with proven, on-going excellence in  research and postgraduate supervision, academic extra-curricula work, and community engagement;
  • Proven ability to raise substantial research and programmatic funding is essential;
  • Appropriate experience in liaising with internal and external stakeholders. 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Appropriate communication and language skills;
  • Understanding of gender and social justice;
  • Proven strategic development, planning and implementation skills;
  • Facilitation and negotiation skills;
  • Good interpersonal, change management, and conflict management skills;
  • Management and leadership skills.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Managerial / administrative experience relevant to the higher education environment;
  • Demonstrable administrative skills;
  • An understanding of the vision of the Faculty and a commitment to achieve the strategic goals of the University.

The Director of the CSA & G is a term appointment for four years and is renewable based on a combination of performance and funding. The Director of the CSA & G also forms part of the Executive Management team of the Faculty and reports to the Dean of the Faculty. 

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
