SCHOOL OF NURSING, MIDWIFERY AND SOCIAL CARE

Research Fellow - Fixed Term until March 31st 2020 - Full Time

Grade 5, GBP 32,816 - GBP 39,152

We are looking to appoint a Research Fellow. The successful applicant will become a part of a team in the ESRC funded Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research (SCADR). This is an exciting opportunity to work in a national centre that brings together academics, research fellows and experts in public engagement to spearhead the use of linked administrative data to address policy relevant research questions. We work closely with colleagues in Scottish Government and the third sector to align work to policy needs.

The successful applicant will be engaged with two key studies that link together the national census to administrative data sources. The first is an establish study that addresses questions relating to the availability and implications of informal care in the final year of life. The second is an evolving study that aims to assess the social circumstances of veterans.

Much of your time will be spent in SCADR in Edinburgh. It is there that the data is securely held and accessed. You will be part of a community of researchers working on projects using similar linked administrative data and analytical approaches. You will be responsible for analysis and reporting findings both through concise policy reports and academic papers. Achieving our aims will require you will liaise with our support team including our research coordinator, and our public engagement and impact managers. You will also spend some of your time in the School of Health and Social Care at Edinburgh Napier University. This will embed you in a team of academics lecturing and researching closely related issues to health, wellbeing and care.

What we are looking for

Essential requirements

• Completed PhD on health or social sciences related topic that has required use of large linked datasets.
• Management of large linked administrative or survey datasets
• Statistical analysis of linked administrative data, large national surveys, or equivalent.
• Research project management including data applications
• Ability to write and run syntax for statistical programmes such as Stata, SAS, SPSS and/or R.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Demonstrable ability to write at a level commensurate with publication in academic journals.
• Willingness to travel to meetings and conferences in the UK as required by the developing study.
• Ability to engage with academic audiences at national and international conferences in the UK and overseas.

Desirable attributes

• Completion of ONS Safe Researcher training or equivalent.
• Masters degree in health or social science topic
• Analysis of longitudinal data.
• Working with different stakeholders including those from academic or policy arenas.
• Experience of presenting to academic conferences.
• Experience of public engagement events.
• Submission of academic papers for publication.
• Knowledge and/or experience of health and social care in the Scottish and international context.
